I forgot if I applied for the food plan already; I applied for housing, but don't remember marking anything for food plan. So, was the food plan thing part of the housing app? Also, what does the basic food plan include? Is it sufficient?

I think the default food plan is the "Any 13" or something like that. It's a pretty decent plan, and (imho) the next-best plan after the "Flex 13," which just adds EntreePlus cash.

Get EntreePlus if possible. The Any 13 plan is a rip off. It comes down to about $8 per meal. And the Any 9 plan is about $11 per meal. You need flexibility.

flex 13 fan here...

Also, take into account what your habits will be...when I got involved with student government I suddenly found myself eating in the Union alot...if I didn't have flex 13, I would have been spending a LOT of money outa' my bank account...

So, did I already apply for food with my housing? I honestly don't remember.
How does the dining system work? Is alot of it all you can eat? Or are there like restaraunts? Sorry if this sounds really stupid, but I've never been to UMich.

you'll get an idea when you go to orientation...but basically its all you can eat...and its one meal credit per visit to the cafeteria...I believe you can still change your meal plan on the housing website well into the school year in Sept...so you have time to experiement with what works.

I'll probably get the flex 13 plan, it seems the most convenient.

is it like 'buffet'ish style, like u go grab or own food from some choices, or are there just two or three chocies a day and some cheifs get them for you?

buffet...the main entrees are served but u can get as many as u want...it may seem like a nice deal, until u realize ur paying $8 per meal though

would you say there are quite some varieties? or like care to name how it was like one of the days (if you remember any) tho i noe umich food is the standard not good uni food
yeh im pretty curious :D

Wait, I'm paying $8 per meal? ***? How am I going to afford that? Why would they charge so much? Would it be cheaper to eat non-university food?
Also, to current/past students:
How much do you estimate you spent per month at UM? That is outside of the room and board and tuition that you've already been billed for.

I think 200 bucks a month is a max for spending...its really easy to not spend anything really...

The meal plan is included in ur room payment. So you never really see ur paying $8 per meal. If thats a problem, try the 135 meal plan. Comes down to about 9-10 meals per week. And the ones u don't use, u can use at snack bars such as Alice's Place, and it gets funded back at $2.50ish (i think), which isn't a lot however.

The only money you're likely to spend outside of room and board and tuition once you're settled is meals on Saturday night (when dining halls are closed) and washing/drying clothes. It's $1.50 total (or less, if you have EntreePlus) to do one load, wash, and dry and you can get something fast from Jimmy John's (subs) or pizza for ~$4-7, with nicer sit-down restaurants (typically, a rarity to have time and money for for most) up to ~$20 for most.

But the meal plan only covers like 13 meals a week. That still leaves you 8 per week. Is it typical to get 8 free meals a week?
So, what about like partying? I mean, a couple of drinks can run a lot of money.
And do you like no buy clothes once your there or something?
That sounds really inexpensive. If it's only 200 per month, I think I can handle it easy.

If you eat all the meals, it's not $8/meal -- it's more like $5. It really depends how much you eat and which plan you're on. The Any 13 is what's included in your room and board rate. You can change to another plan in the first month. Any 13 doesn't include any Entree Plus - which is the "dining dollars" part of the meal plan that you can spend in the snack bars.

So you don't have to fill out a separate app for the meal plan?

BTW, did anyone get his/her housing assignment/contract yet?

No seperate app for the meal plan. You will automatically be put on the Any 13. You can change to another plan in the first month (or before). To answer Maguo's question, there is an Any 18 plan for a few hundred more a semester. Housing contracts won't be mailed for a few weeks.
