Food

When I was visiting UC, I ate at the cafe in the Divinity School. It was really good! I was wondering how the food is in the dining halls though & elsewhere on campus.

Anyone have any thoughts ?

Bartlett has a tidy, comprehensive salad bar. That's all I had time for when I visited in the summer, but thumbs up nonetheless.

I've eaten at Bartlett and it was pretty good. They had all different types of food to chose from which made it nice to have a selection

Bartlett was considered the second best college cafeteria by the WSJ... or the NYT... now I forget, but it was one of them!!!

drools over the eggrolls

Ok - I don't really post here anymore, but I couldn't resist enlightening prospies about the delectable ambrosia we have here at U of C.

First off, I want to stress that BJ is a great dorm, but you should be aware that after the first quarter or so the dining hall food becomes unbearably repetitive and disgusting. I actually put off going to meals sometimes because I don't want to face the random pile of mush that (sans the placard) could be either "pasta," "meat," or "vegetables," (or some ungodly combination of the three). I would go to Bartlett more often, except that when it's 15 degrees out, the nominally better "food" isn't worth it. Basically, the food here is passable at best and terrible at worst. In other words it's college dining and it's a universal affliction to be tolerated and borne with good will and a cheerful demeanor. But every once and awhile, when a disenfranchised chem major comes back trying to burn down the campus* you can be quietly confident that in the back of her mind fueling her rage are the smooth tunes of "Love FM" - the theme songs to hell.

*true story

ohhhhh... I happen to love BJ dining! Maybe that's because my mom never made anything that couldn't be put in a microwave, but important things about BJ...

1) Though the mush may be mush, as my housemates noted, it's often very good. And they're pretty good about providing vegan/vegetarian options. And labeling those as such.

2) The salad bar is not half bad. Neither are the desserts. Last I checked at home, I didn't have hummus and feta and gorgonzola at my disposal, nor did I have chocolate cake, meringue, and eight different kinds of ice cream.

3) The simple stuff-- bread, pasta, tomato sauce, hamburgers, pizza, etc, is always available at every meal (breakfast it's omelettes instead of hamburgers and obviously no pizza, pasta, etc.) and they can't really mess that up.

4) BJ is introducing some more Bartlett-esque things more often, like made-to-order pasta dishes, burritos (which are HEAVENLY), waffles, etc. The staff tries to do something "special" nearly every lunch/dinner.

Bottom line... not amazing, but certainly enough variety to give you what you need. The freshman 15 was not a problem for me.

I need to cook once in a while now. I think if the normal food were that bad I would get neurotic. I don't have them now, but do any of the dorms have good farmer's market access and hand-folded katanas?

...do they have usable kitchens, even?

In some dorms there are kitchens open to students. I forget which ones.. I want to say s-h, but I'm not sure.

I visited the kitchen at snitchcock, breck and maclean, and they were not bad at all- clean, spacious, and everyone gets his or her own cabinet space for a yearly fee/

Do you know how much that fee is?

max has kitchens available to students..

also, you may think bartlett is good after the first few weeks, until you realize that even with like 10 different stations, it starts to get repetitive and gross. i usually can only handle a salad at bartlett these days..

HAHAHAHA That chemistry girl?? Yes...that psychotic freak gets made fun of so much. Honestly, what kind of chemistry major can't burn a building down?

yum food.Who doesnt like food.

I don't.. raises my hand

the dinings hall can't be half bad, it's like eating at hogwarts

the food is actually not that magical

So I wont turn into a toad? WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!

nor a ferret!

i had very good friend rice
