Football weekends

I am wondering how much if any time a 4th year will have on weekends in the fall. I am planning a trip to the academy for a November football weekend, and while I am not expecting to see my son, it would be nice if I could. I realize there are weekends for training etc, just wondering if there are ANY weekends that cadets are able to at least say “HI” to their parents if we are there.

Hey, you will absolutely be able to see your son. We are required to tailgate before the game, and you would be able to be with him for about the two hours before the game. Also, unless they are restricted, he would be able to sign out for the rest of the weekend. He also would be able to hang out with you Friday night until taps (1:30AM I believe). If you know in advance the dates that you will be there, your son can pass up a request that he be able to leave even if they happen to be restricted that weekend.

How does that all work before Recognition? I'm assuming overnight passes on weekends start afterwards, but I'm ignorant really on the whole issue of leave our first year.

Nope passes (including overnight) are allowed after parents weekend for freshmen. An overnight pass is two basic passes and a day pass is 1 basic pass. The baseline is 5 passes per half semester for freshmen.

during basic, there's nothing. during the school year, tho, the sign out is as AC mentioned it. typically 4 digs cannot sign out before parents weekend, but after that (end august), all cadets can sign out on the pass system. to leave for part of a day is 1 pass, overnight is 2, and weekend (fri-sun) is 3. 4 digs are given 5 passes for each half of a semester, and can only sign out on weekends (not mon-thurs) or other times when their squad may restrict them

2nd semester 4 digs can sign out mon-fri once per month if they were on deans list first semester. The only time it is really useful is if you are at your sponsors and just dont feel like coming back on Sunday until taps instead of at ACQ like normal.

Is there any way to earn more than the standard 5 passes? and what are the requirments for the different lists (deans, etc.)?

the different lists get you extra passes, iirc from my host cadet at orientation

A 3.0 GPA, MPA, or PEA will put you on the respective list. You get five extra passes for every list you're on, which really come in handy.

3,0 GPA is straight forward enough, but what does a 3.0 MPA and PEA translate to?

GPA - Grade Point Average - Dean's List
MPA - Military Performance Average - Commandant's List
PEA - Physical Education Average - Athletic Director's List
All three above - Superintendent's List

If you don't use all of your passes in one half semester, can you roll them over to the next, or do they just disappear if you don't use them?

Ace, thanks for the info..."required to tailgate"!! That's awesome!! Is that a cadet activity? or can parents bring burgers etc.... how does the whole tailgating thing work at the academy... I am so excited, I had no idea!!

We usually would come into town on Thursday...meet at the Chapel Thursday PM before retreat, do something Friday night (attended two hockey games after mid Oct), visit the squadron tailgate and hang for a while, then head to our seats for the Wings of Blue demo, march on, and flyover. The 4 digs aren't allowed to sit with you. After the game we would go out Saturday night and usually head home Sunday.

chrissy:

They don't rollover, and you will not get to use any left over at the end of the academic go or the semester.

With the exception of performance passes... those can carry over.

Football weekends are a lot of fun as a 4 degree because if you win, you will most likely be put at rest in your squadron, and everyone pretty much goes crazy. Lots of fun. And free night passes. :)

Winning football games means fun weekends for four digs. :)

And to clarify, like red mentioned, performance passes do carry over. There are two types of passes: basic pass units, and performance pass units. You'll get your five BPUs twice a semester. If you're on any lists (second semester only, obviously), those five (or ten or fifteen) get added to the BPU mix. If you do something really well and get a positive Form 10, you might get one or two performance passes. When signing out, you can use any combination of the two that you want. Since the performance passes roll over though, it's always best to use your BPUs first.
