The Great Gatsby
The Kite Runner
1984
Hamlet
Their Eyes Were Watching God
Fahreheit 451
Of Mice and Men
Invisible Man
Wuthering Heights
Catch-22
The Awakening
Beloved
The Grapes pf Wrath
The Things They Carried
The Stranger

Catch-22 was good, but pretty long
Hamlet was good once it got going
Fahrenheit 451 was kinda good
I’ve always wanted to read 1984

Personally, I would go with 1984.

Go with The Great Gastby! My favorite school book.

Yea I say The Great Gatsby also.

Farenheit 451!! Awesome book.
I did really The Great Gatsby though too…
1984 is not very good, at least I didn’t like it (an interesting concept though)
Hamlet I heard was good, I have to read it this year
Their Eyes Were Watching God was HORRIBLE!
I haven’t heard good things about Of Mice and Men
I hated the Grapes of Wrath! I thought it was long and very dry.

Go with Farenheit 451, I thought it was good. Either that or The Great Gatsby, HAVE FUN!

You can use Hamlet for almost any prompt, so definitely read that.
Fahrenheit 451 is a very good book and also very applicable to most prompts.

The Great Gatsby and Fahrenheit 451 are both short and pretty easy reads.

Catch-22 and The Grapes of Wrath are longer, but again, easy reads. I really liked Catch-22 personally.

I loved 1984. I would highly recommend that one.

The Stranger was also short and a quick read, but I personally didn’t find it easy to understand the philosophy behind it. Then again I didn’t put much effort into understanding it, but it’s probably not the easiest book you’ve listed.

Of Mice and Men bored me to death, but I haven’t read it in forever.

The Kite Runner was a good story, but I wouldn’t recommend it as highly as any of the other books I’ve mentioned from your list (except Of Mice and Men).

Definitely Hamlet! Reading anything Shakespeare will help you on the test and works for any prompt.
If you are trying to find another book that is used often for free response it’s Invisible Man. Personally, I didn’t like it because it’s another book about an oppressed person…yawn. However, it’s really easy to write about-tons of symbols, motifs, themes.

I’m partial toward 1984 and The Stranger, personally.

Gatsby, Hamlet, Catch-22. Good works and are applicable for most open-essay exam prompts.

Catch-22 is hilarious. But it is kind of lengthy.
The Kite Runner is one my favorite books. What a beautiful story.
And the two Steinbeck books you’ve listed are his two best. If you haven’t read a Steinbeck yet I would highly recommend you read one of those.

Of Mice and Men was really good and there’s a lot you can write about.

I hated The Awakening.

Invisible Man or Great Gatsby.
But Beloved and 1984 weren’t bad.

F-451 was definitely the best.

The Awakening provides solid, memorable material for future essays. But that’s where the good aspects end. I’d recommend to skip the awakening and read Madame Bovary instead. They are similar, but Madame Bovary is, in my opinion, better.

1984 is a great summer read, imo. I think it’s kind of cliche for essays, though.

Hamlet and The Great Gatsby must be read before you go to college. It’s just one of those things. So just read them now. They also work well for essays, although they are somewhat complex (which is good, because you can argue different sides, unlike say The Awakening, which is just so darn explicit).

I LOVED the Kite Runner. My AP Lang teacher made us read it in order to prepare for AP Lit and she made it a part of our final. The Kite Runner has been on the list of books you can use for one of the FRQ’s. It was really good and even the people who didn’t like reading thought the book was AWESOME!

1984 was probably my favorite but I really liked The Things They Carried too. I liked the format of a bunch of different short stories.

The Kite Runner, The Great Gatsby, 1984, and Catch-22 were all very good and quite enjoyable. You can’t go wrong with any of those. I’ve read quite a few of those you listed, but the ones i listed were my favorites.

I loved 1984 and Beloved. But mostly 1984. Yeah, that seems to be a popular one.

Yea. Catch-22 and 1984 seem to get all the love :]
The other day (actually a few weeks ago) I saw this burly guy with a tatoo that said “Catch-22”. It was really cool. It didn’t fit his image though…haha. He had earings and a cigarette.
