I am really torn as to whether of not to enroll in some honors classes at DeAnza community college, some people say that Berkeley doesn't care and DeAnza doesn't even have Tap so is it really worth it? I am scared of risking it and getting a B in an honors class when I could have gotten an A in the non-honors equivalent. But then i found this on the UC website:
Comprehensive Review Factors for Transfer Applicants

4 Participation in academically selective honors courses or programs.

What should I do, do you think Berkeley cares about honor classes?
Thanks in advance

I was told they do not. They care about gpa. If you can get an A then go for it. If you think that you will get less than an A I wouldn't bother.

Jess. I have direct experience with DeAnza's honors program. (i go there.)

It is not worth it. I second everything Sweet is saying. and in fact, i have done that. I got the B in the honors class, and it ends up not mattering at all. (brought down my gpa by .03, too.)

You want to get the highest possible GPA you can get. No matter what, an A is going to look good than a B, even if the B is an honors class. It's up to you though.
I had a tough decision too whether to take my school's TAP/honors, but in the end, I decided not to, after hearing so many TAP students being extremely unsatisfied about their experiences. And the honors teachers in my school are crap too, I wonder who picked them out..

well......depends on how many B's u get i think....if you have like 8~10 A's and 1~2 B's, i don't think it matters, oh....and it also depends on what B's you got, because they review their patterns too.

let say u got B in music, and other class such as english, math you got all A, then that B is not going to affect that much. Anyways, stick with 3B's the most in your transcript.

Wow. Are there really a lot of unsatisfied Tap/honors kids?

Doing honors is what made CC tolerable for me. Was a community of people who actually CARED about getting out of there, so classes were more focused and the people generally had similar goals. I'm still close with 5 of the honors kids from my CC who go to my transfer school. Also, the classes were generally EASIER (at my CC, can't vouch for other schools) because the professors were more concerned with what we were learning than going through the motions and administering tons of busy work. I got a lot out of all of my honors courses and I can't say that I would've felt completely prepared for UCLA without them.

But I get the being worried about your GPA thing. I don't know, though. Not everyone has a bad experience :)

I think DeAnza's honors program is different than yours and it's differences make it unsatisfying. It doesn't have Tap, so no priority consideration at Ucla. Also instead of having classes with all honors kids most of their classes are just normal but then you get an extra assignment or two. At any other school I would probably do the honors program just for Tap, but at DeAnza it just isn't worth it.

Yeah the quality of honors programs definitely varies hugely between schools.

I was lucky to have a really commited honors director (one who was actually one of the intiators of the TAP contract program) and so we got a lot out of the program. I've definitely heard about less organized and less rewarding programs at different schools.
