Lol, I just found that funny.

here comes another tough year... school starts tomorrow

I can already tell my AP Bilogy class is going to be tough....

Jimmy:

Doesn't your high school have a SAT Prep course for students? Alternatively can you afford a SAT tudor or share the cost with a few friends? That is best way to prepare. Otherwise get SAT practice books and keep taking practice tests.

I have been reading this thread with interest and amusement and admiration that you all are gearing up for the college years. Some of you are worried about expanding on your EC - politics comes to mind :),( and by the way, if your involvement is far and above others your age and you are already receiving recognition for your involvement, just keep on doing what you are doing if you enjoy it - this is true of ANY EC). Others of you laughed at one poster's accomplishments at Table Tennis - you shouldn't - this is totally a hook! Point of fact, a student from D's school made it into a selective school -along with having the grades, etc. his "hook" was that he's won national yo-yo competitions! And no, the school doesn't have a yo-yo team and he isn't going to be a pro yo-yoer. (yo-yo ist? :) ) Who is an ADCOM going to remember? The applicant who has been on every committee and in every club doing an hours work here and there (like SO MANY applicants) or an applicant who has really achieved at one particular thing? A hook sets you apart from the crowd and that is important if a school receives 20,000 applications a year.

Here's something that kids need to HEAR and really UNDERSTAND. Schools (especially the selectives) are NOT- I repeat -NOT looking for the oft mentioned "well rounded student". They are attempting to put together a well rounded COMMUNITY of students. This means the outstanding tuba player and black belt AND the Intel winner AND the 1980 SAT who's "passion" (sorry, there's that word again, but it is important) is community service. A college campus is and should be a mix of all types and abilities just like in the "real world". Top scores and nothing else to bring to the mix just won't make it. If I remember correctly, Harvard for example denies about 1/2 of the perfect SAT score applicants. That's "all" they had. Rarely does a school want a class full of students who have never been involved with anything outside of academics. (OK - MAYBE CAL TECH :) ) But so often after applicants received their letters last year you would see a post on CC of 'I had a perfect 1600! How could they deny me?! What more did they want?!' Maybe they should have learned to yo-yo.

Good luck in finding the school that is a perfect fit for each of you!

nationally ranked yo-yo-ist? lol. that's pretty cool. =D

School starts in two days! I'm spending the night at my friend's house so we can do our summerwork in one night :D.

Should I still take Strings/Orchestra 12 this year (because I was taking the course in the last 3 years), even though I'm really not interested in music and hate the teacher's thoroughly boring fruitless lessons?

probably (10)

I miss this thread, guys. How are all your junior years going?

I knew it would be hard, but the homework load really sucks. I have 3 APs: APUSH, Chem, and Lit. and Comp., and I am up waaay too late every night. I can't even fathom the lives of those of you with 5/6 or more APs. I got all As on my midterm though, which was a relief. I think I could get a 4 or 5 on the History test right now, my Chem class is not too hard but the test will be. I am going to BOMB the Lit. test. I am getting 3s and 4s (out of 9) on our practice essays, and they are still close to the highest scores in the class. I'm working about 10 hours a week at a Papa Murphy's for the excessive gas costs, plus a couple of other activities. I'm worried about not having much community service, but o well. I'm worrying about the PSAT, I don't think I have much of a chance to be Semi-Finalist, my school is only getting like 1 or 2 every three years. I'm learning a lot about the college search from the seniors at my school, there are actually gonna be some kids getting into great schools this year at my craptacular public school. I'm wishing I did more reading and ACT/SAT prep over the summer, and lamenting that I don't have time to read anything for pleasure this year. I have a lot of fun arguing with my socialist, errrr, very liberal history teacher. I'm trying not to let my smart mouth antics burn bridges to the teachers I'll need recs from. But now I'm just trying to live for the moment, having fun at football games where our team is ranked first in the state, and reading all my AP lit. books on Sparknotes and getting better grades than the kids who actually read them. I think I'd be happy going to my presumed safety at this point, UMaryland-College Park, so I've decided not to worry about those Ivy super reaches.

I also had fun at the end of summer: my friends and I drove 2 hours to a Whitecastle near Chicago to reenact Harold and Kumar, and we almost killed ourselves with a metal tube filled with black powder. But just the same, a month into school and I can't WAIT for next summer.

Sorry for the long post, but you did ask!

A week a ago, I just found out that I lost my student gov't election, for the THIRD CONSECUTIVE TIME. I also failed the audition for our broadcasting team. great, my entire EC plan has completely screwed up in the first month of my junior year. Plus....... I am taking the Oct. 8 SAT next week (NEXT WEEK!), and I'm 1000% percent sure that I'm not ready for that test right now. I am planning to apply to Yale, Harvard, and Princeton, and all my friends are saying that I'm still daydreaming.

Well everyone who applies to those schools is daydreaming, just do your best and tell yourself that you will end up going to your safety, at least then you won't be disappointed.

Hmm let's see. In terms of academics, I'm doing well. 5 AP's, one honors. The only class I'm iffy about is APUS. We were tested on chapters 1-6 for our first test, which I bombed (44%! Unbelievable!). Then I came back with 90%'s on our first two DBQ's and a 96% (one of the highest grades in all the APUS classes) on our chapter 7 test. I swear my teacher thinks I'm on crack or something. Eww we have a chapter 8 test tomorrow. I'm the only junior in my AP Calc AB class, but I'm doing really well and one of my best senior friends is in my class, so all is well. I got to switch from robotics to AP bio, which I love, except that we have to handle dead ivertebrates... My AP lang teacher loves me, and my AP chem teacher has realized that nobody else in my class remembers what a mole is. My french teacher has been out for the past month with appendicitis. Hopefully she'll be coming back soon.

In terms of EC's... Debate is going well. My partner and I won our first policy debate; she got best speaker, I got second. We received about 35+ applications for our tutoring organization, and accepted 20 tutors. Now we just need to get people to come be tutored. But we've already contacted the middle school about advertising there, so all is good. I dropped out of RUMUN because 1) the SAT, 2) none of my friends are going and 3) they were going to partner me up with a newbie frosh. I'll probably double up with JHUMUNC and BosMUN in the late winter. I've joined National French Honors Society, so we'll see how that goes. NHS doesn't accept applications until like March or something, so that will have to wait. Meanwhile I need to contact my guidance counselor about 1) Princeton University courses next year and 2) Governor's School.

I <3 the SAT. I took the Bulletin practice test yesterday (and scored one point better than two of my best friends! Hehe) and my score would've qualified me to be a semifinalist. Hopefully the actual PSAT will be similar. I'm taking the SAT on November 5 (my half birthday! And my actual birthday is the same day as the APUS test - the one I hate the most! ***!). I hope I meet my goal so I won't have to take it again.

Friends are good. I swear it's like I'm out of my own house half the time. Whether it's going to someone's house, sneaking someone onto my bus after school, meeting people at 2 AM, or answering all my cell phone calls, I'm always doing something with someone. It's great.

I love junior year. Hehe.

honestly, its not that serious

LONG TIME NO SEE! But anyway, I'm finally feeling that I going back on track again (after Battle SAT for a month). so, how are all the other juniors doing?

For me, schools in our entire province have remained closed for 2 LONG WEEKS because our teachers were striking(isn't that sweet? 2 weeks of vacation, and it felt like summer) Yet, school's back now, and I've finished taking my SAT Reasoning, and I have also just started a JSA Chapter at our school, which turns out to be pretty popular. I also made plan for next summer, and that is going to rural China to help communities there build a school!

In reference to the SAT I've just taken, I think I'll take it again next Jan., since I know that I haven't done too well on this one (oh well).

Let's hear some more stuff from other juniors.

n1gga please

Im takin Apush, APCHem,APCalc,APLAng, Anat Phys, and SpanIII. Am i retarded?

lol well it's good to know that I'm not the only junior out there with such a crazy courselead...

ap us, ap chem, ap lang. and comp., ap latin, spanish V, honors pre-calculus....and you'll like this..my lowest average is in PUBLICATIONS!!! WHY?????????

I'm also a junior! A white male from North Dakota interested in Eastern European Affairs. Weird combination, but oh well. The harvest season is in full swing here as well as school. The first quarter report cards came out today, and I'm pretty sure I have a 3.7-4.0. I'm hoping for the 4.0.

I took the PSAT, and think I did horribe but oh well. I already have most of my summer planned out as well. Going to Australia&New Zealand with a Student Ambassadors, going to Boy's State, being a junior counselor at ND HOBY, and finding some time to volunteer at the local library. I'll be taking the ACTs later this year, and am aiming for a 27+.

Schools I'm considering: Bowdoin, Wesleyan, Bard, Lewis and Clark C, U Denver, MN-Morris, Carleton, Hamline, Macalester, and St. Olaf.

My safety is obviously MN-Morris, and I have no problem going there if I'm rejected from everywhere else :)

I think I may apply to an Ivy just to see if I get accepted or not as well. I'm not sure my teachers will like filling out a bunch of reccomendations though.

Good Luck with your SATs, SATIIs, APs, and ACTs!

As in bio, hist, calc, stats, B in science research (b/c i'm slow, missing deadlines that have to do with finalizing your project idea), and a C in lang. i'm a procrastinator, and having two quizzes every day on inference details about fifty pages of 1984 every other day is too much combined with my other classes.

i'm ashamed. i should be getting all As.. i'm sure I'll get at least a B.. but. man, i hate that teacher and his quizzes.
