For any juniors that are still trying to decide where to go, check out THEU.com it's a website dedicated to information about colleges that comes straight from students that attend those schools. they even have DVDs you can buy that give you an uncensored tour of the schools and surrounding towns! I would highly reccommend the box set, its worth the investment and the videos are really entertaining.

When applying to super good schools (i.e. Yale), does it help to have massive amounts of community service? Or does having a year-round 3 hour a day sport (swimming), concert/marching band, and various other clubs balance that out? I have about 100 hours of community service, and I probably will finish out with about 150 the way it is going, because I don't have all that much time. I was looking on who was accepted and deferred EA for Yale this year, and from what I saw 150 hours was just as good as 500 just as long as you did a bunch of other stuff. Does anyone have a comment on this?

Community service hours don't really matter...

Bump........:):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

Hi, all... I too, am a junior ready for the "perilous road"...

As of now I'm thinking of applying Early Decision to Rice... that could change, of course, if I fall in love with a'nuther school, or if I decide I have no chance at Rice. =P

aannnndddd... this summer, I'm going the Vanderbilt PAVE Program. yay! (and I'm going to study for the SAT IIs)...

POST 100!!

erhswimming:

Community service hours won't make or break you, usually.

I did get asked to apply for a specific community service scholarship at The College of New Jersey. It was my last choice school, though, and I haven't heard of too many other schools who offer things like that.

On the Common App there's no special place for listing service activities, but since it's something I devoted myself to throughout high school, I wrote about my community service projects in the "additional informaton" section.

The only time I think it would make a difference is if it really defines who you are as a person. For example, some people get into the most selective schools by being a nationally recognized musician or something. If your community service has a really significant impact, then it might make you stand out.

And just a tip: try to devote yourself to projects/service that directly ties in to your interests and your possible future life paths. I'm going to be a political science major in the fall and my biggest project is volunteering at my Congressman's office four hours a week.

Bring it up!

Here's a question: What are you (juniors) doing right now??

Ruminating on the fact that being a junior is hard work and stinks

This weekend I'm studying for AP's.

I've decided that Chicago is my second choice. It's gaining on Yale pretty quickly. I almost even considering applying EA Chicago and RD Yale... almost.

I can't wait to start writing my Chicago essays. They look like tons of fun. :p

But yeah... until then... AP's, SAT II, ACT, classes, summer plans, competitions, club officership elections, and getting the right classes for next year... ew.

Studying for AP (yeah, only one), and SATII.

At my small public school they only offer 6 AP classes. Some of them are non applicable for me (i.e. AP Spanish when I am in French, or AP Calc is only offered the same period as AP Statistics. This means that I can only take 4 AP courses. Our nearest community college is an hour away, so I can't take more classes. I know that admissions looks at what was available, but I am still concerned. Any advice?

Online classes.

martloretta....don't worry about it. The adcoms will realize that you aren't taking AP Spanish, and for the Calc/Stats thing I would ask your GC to note that in her rec (that you would have taken both but couldn't, etc). I think it is great that you are looking for the hardest courseload possible and colleges will too. Perhaps you could look into online courses but don't stress out if you don't...you have already demonstrated that you are taking the hardest courseload possible by taking every AP you can.

Studying for my 3 APs: Biology, US History, and Statistics. Plus SATIIs in Bio and US History. A fun couple of weeks...

Where/how can I take online AP courses? I am really interested in them since our school doesn't offer ANY AP courses.
