So basically I will hand him the envelope and and tell him to insert the recommendation letter. Bud should I also tell him to put my name and SSN on his recommendation letter or should I tell him to attach a piece of paper with my Name and SSN in the envelope? I would love to be organized so that the admission officers don't have a hard time to figure out whom the recommendaiton is for. Any input will be appreciated!

Bump, any parent can help me with it?

My son gave his teachers a typed list of schools and addresses to send their recommendations. We provided envelopes and stamps too.

He also emailed them his “resume” to help them along and they knew his intended major.

Yes, he also provided them with his full name as it appears on the apps, DOB and SS as the schools want this on each form for identification purposes.

I am pretty sure we gave the professor who did some outside recommendations for my son birthday and SSN info, but I have a copy of the letter and he forgot to include it. Unless your names is very common, it probably isn’t an issue, but I think it’s better if it gets included.

All of my kids had an outside person write a letter for them and my kids provided their birthday and ss# so it could be included in the letter. This letter was not sent to the GC so they wanted to insure that it got to the right folder once it arrived at their prosceptive schools.

Colleges get tens of thousands of pieces of mail and matching them to the correct application is time-consuming and often futile. Here are a few tips:

Make sure the outside recommender has your full name. A lot of kids go by their middle name, or use Dan instead of Daniel, etc. - make sure the person puts your full legal name - EXACTLY the way you put it on your application - on the letter.

Have the person put your DOB and home address on the letter. SS# is optional - I actually prefer not to use it.

Finally, if the college assigned you an ID # when you created your on-line account - put this # on the letter as well.

Remember - there is no point in asking for outside letters unless they make it to your file. The majority of colleges scan incoming mail and then match it to your digital file - so the info needs to be on the actual letter.
