For the essay, are these phrases to cliche to use?

Just wondering since I’ve heard on multiple occasions that there are few things which admissions officers hate in college essays than hearing cliches such as “a chip off the old block” or “a clean slate,” since it really “makes their blood boil.”

-Time flew by
-Words of wisdom
-Necessity is the mother of all invention

I’ll probably add more phrases as I continue writing my essays

Yes, they are too cliched.

If you have to ask if they’re cliche, there’s a good chance they are.

Definitely.

You want your essay to show you are an interesting person. Those phrases sound boring.

Would you seriously consider using the phrase “chip off the old block”?? I think the last time I heard that, Ward was saying it to the Beaver.
