For those who are going to Richmond Class of 2021...

@cloudysmom Double majoring (for me CS and math) and double minoring (music and dance) I find is not that difficult. Normal course load at UR is 4-5 units (basically 4-5 classes, since most classes are 1 unit) and I take 5 classes a semester, plus music ensembles/lessons (I take way more of those then what are required even for majors lol). So I have the same workload academically as anyone else (double majors, major/minor, single major), they’re just distributed differently. I definitely had to plan ahead, though, as I have very few elective spots (pretty much everything has to fulfill a requirement for me); most semesters I take one class for each major, one for each minor (although I finished academics for the music minor last semester), and a gen ed (or elective, or doubling up on something).

Yes, the two freshmen female dorms are Lora Robins (LoRo) and Moore. As far as I’m aware, none of the dorms at UR have kitchens (although, Lora Robins has a kitchenette that has a sink; but no stove, etc), only the apartments do. Not all dorms have common rooms/lounges (the dorm I was in sophomore year did not)- I don’t think Moore does, but LoRo definitely does.

@cloudysmom Hey! I went to Choices at JMU and liked it; however, I found myself more drawn to University of Richmond. I even had to stop myself from talking about it there. Also, I was not as thrilled by their (JMU) honors as I previously thought. I feel as if University of Richmond provides its students with more resources and that UR is more in touch with the students. Also, I wasn’t really feeling how large the campus at JMU was. It took too long in my opinion to get from one point to the next. I was even late to events and there just wasn’t enough time. I was told that my classes would be across campus too! I have to say, the people are very nice and Harrisonburg is a wonderful area. It reminds me of where I live; however I know that I want something different. The rumors aren’t true at JMU! Not everyone held the door!

My friends who went loved it though! They really seemed to have found a home. One of my friends even went and paid her deposit on spot!

Though I am going to miss having the best dorms at JMU, I am very excited with my decision on UR over JMU Honors. Go Spiders! I think another thing that really makes me feel connected to UR are the frequent emails from students that really reaffirm what I want. Especially all the stuff about Bonner’s! However, I will still love UR even if I do not get into the Bonner’s Scholars Program. Can’t wait until the 22nd! Praying for good weather. I plan to bring up my signed sheet and papers that day. I might even scan them in earlier.

On another note, a friend of my decided on UR officially. She got waitlisted at a couple places that she wanted to go and decided that UR was best from her options. She also said that when she got off the waitlist for one of the schools, she liked UR more! Go figure!

Will they talk about the roommate selection process at the admitted day on the 22nd.

@nopoto457 I’m not sure and I hope that someone will be able to answer your question soon.

@cloudysmom I got off the waitlist for The ANSWER! I am so excited for Friday and Saturday! :x :-*

@nopoto457 I think they will talk about it! If not ask your tour guide. They are super helpful!! I know the schedule includes a Residence Hall tour so I bet they will talk about it then.

@TheYellowBiscuit See you Saturday!! Super excited!

@rvalover7 I had THE BEST TIME EVER at U of R today and yesterday. I love this school and really vibed with the 2021 students and students on campus. I feel very comfortable and wanted from the school. Can’t wait until I move in!!!

@TheYellowBiscuit Yes same! I had a wonderful day there. Counting down the days until move-in day!

@guineagirl96 A much belated thank u for the info! She is trying to double minir as well as it seems just another couple of courses will do it and many count toward both minors or majors. D has started working with her peer advisor although has not yet been contacted by her faculty advisor.

She got into Moore, 3rd flr. We toured both, it doesn’t seem as nice as Lara Robins but is nearer all her classes & in a better location, she feels. I read it’s one of the worst forms, oh well, hopefully next yr will be better, it is what it is!

@rvalover7 @TheYellowBiscuit I haven’t been on CC in a while but glad to see u both still excited! The Yellow Biscuit, yayay! Excited u decided on UR! My D is also counting the days! Where are u both living? She got 3rd for Moore.

It might be a rumor but I heard Marsh and Moore were both getting some renovations and upgrades!

@Racspider I heard that too. I know all of the freshmen dorms will be co-ed this year. South Court is currently undergoing a decent facelift on the inside and should be open by January. University has a big problem right now with upperclass housing.

@cloudysmom Hello, I haven’t been on a while either. I will be in Wood Hall. I can confirm that Moore is getting new furniture and that Marsh is indeed being renovated. Also, I heard that Wood and Marsh are worse then Moore, so tell her she has nothing to worry about. :stuck_out_tongue:

@rvalover7 Oh that’s no good! I hope there is enough room and stuff for the upperclassmen. Also, not all the freshmen dorms are co-ed. I believe Dennis and Moore are single gender; however, the rest are co-ed.

Can’t wait to see you all soon! I actually had a good time with registration as well.

Was just coming on to say that daughter’s roommate was in Richmond early in the month and could indeed confirm that their room in Marsh was getting a major facelift. Rugs are gone, wood floors exposed, fresh paint etc. Their room is awesome. And to the detractors of Marsh or Moore, remember that these dorms are close to classes, all sport games, and the lodges. They are super social dorms where many of the freshmen athletes are housed as well.

@TheYellowBiscuit @momoftwins2017 Great about the facelift, I had heard Moore was sorta worn out but it’s in a great location. And the school told me Moore was all female. Lora Robbins had different wings & this will be the 1st yr some of the wings will be male, but no mixed hallways like I had back in the 80’s, lol!

Anyone know about bookcases? She was hoping she’d have her own o er her desk but I hear they have to share one? Wonder how I could find out? Getting excitedz,

@cloudysmom ~ there were some photos on a group me account that showed that some dorms that were refreshed may be getting new furniture as well. Daughter couldn’t remember seeing a bookshelf but often desks have a hutch type of shelving above for storage… We shall see! And yes we are getting excited too. Her twin sister heads off this week so she will get a preview of what move in looks like. And this mom will have her first opportunity to say goodbye. :frowning:

@cloudysmom I don’t know if anything has changed in the dorms that were renovated, but I’ve never had a bookcase in any of my dorm rooms in UR (I’ve been in Lora Robins, Robins Hall, and Freeman Hall). My desk has always had a shelf as part of it (above it), but I have never really used that (I’m short, lol, so don’t like things being high; I put things like extra printer paper up there). I have crates that go under my bed and the last couple years, I’ve put one sideways under my bed and put my books, textbooks, and other things I needed often in there.

Has Dennis Hall been renovated or updated furniture? If so, how long ago? Thanks.

@ momoftwins2017. @guineagirl96. Thank you both, afraid I haven’t been on here in a few weeks. There was so much to do to take her to UR. Her dorm had new furniture but 1 small 2 shelf bookcase on floor, nothing over desk on wall. DH wants to build her one to go in back of desk that we will take up in Oct. She has tons of books & likes displaying things so a bookshelf is important to her. Drop off was good, weird & sad but tried not to cry too hard till we drove off!

@cloudysmom How is your daughter enjoying her classes and campus life?

@londondad Hi! She loves the school but is a bit overwhelmed at being in college sharing a room, bathroom, not much privacy. I warned her but it will be good for her - so different to really experience it. She is a very introverted only child, very shy. She has made a group of friends, which is sort of surprising, lol, but I am so glad! She is adjusting a bit more the last few days & is looking forward to seeing fall. Where we live it’s palm trees.

I messaged guineagirl96 but would be interested in your take on this: do you think it’s safe for her to take Amtrak home for Thanksgiving? It looks like the school has a shuttle but train stations can sure be creepy. She’s fairly inexperienced in life and it is worrying me but is much, much less $ than flying. Would love your thoughts!
