And will financial/merit aid estimates or offers be included in that envelope?

My3Daughters:

Generally I believe that answer is YES if you filed a timely CSS and FAFSA. Its not a rock solid number, but an estimate…which is largely accurate. Then you follow up with final tax forms and maybe some additional information to show them if you need more.

Thanks, sovereigndebt. I did already file both the preliminary FAFSA (with the company Fordham referred us to) and the CSS.

Good. One of the things I would change at Fordham is to stop that insidious referral to that third party about filing the FAFSA. Utterly useless and an egregious act of promotion.

You can file FAFSA with the government directly for free. There is no benefit to using a service to do that for you.

Oh well.

I’m still confused about the CSS. We filed the FAFSA with the company Fordham uses and she told me that we didn’t need to fill out the CSS.

ktcollege, I was under the impression that Fordham requires the CSS; I know 2 other private schools my daughter is interested in also do. Isn’t CSS for aid or grants directly through the school, where as FAFSA is government money?

sovereigndebt, the one advantage I noted with the outside company was that I spent only about 20 minutes on the phone (of course I had arleady compiled all the data in preparation for filing myself), and felt as if I were getting things moving a lot earlier, sice I believe FAFSA offically can’t be filed until January?

dowzerw- good to know! I’m from the bath/brunswick area of Maine Glad to see another fellow mainer on here

I went to Fordham web site and it says file the CSS.

As an aside and not to be snarky, but with money on the line, why not check the schools website directly? Why ask here and not double check information from a third party?

Agreed. This forum is interesting but certainly should not be the source on which to make important decisions. That’s why I asked the financial service recommended by Fordham and she told me it was not necessary. That being said, we are filing it anyway as we need to do it for some other schools.

when do you think we will find out on the fordham portal

maine29, NYA. Where you?

I would tell fordham the service is giving wrong information.trfwqqm,

It says right in the letter from Fordham, that if you have filed the CSS, thank you. It then goes on to say that If you are filing the FAFSA, there is no need to file the CSS.

What if I’ve filled out CSS but not FAFSA? Should I do both? And should I wait til Jan 1 to do it?

It says right on the Fordham Website ALL applicants must file CSS and fafsa by feb1 2013.

Go to financial aid codes and deadlines. Right there at the bottom.

It says all ea applicant must mile CSS by Dec 9 to get fin aid estimate, and then file fafsa by feb 1.

But hey, it’s only their own words on their own website.

Ps I just looked at website question page and it was updated last week. So it current.

I strongly suggest calling them and getting clarification.

That’s wierd - I didn’t look on the website, only on the letter from Fordham. I guess it is only if you are applying through the early award program that you don’t have to complete the CSS.

Below is directly from the letter:

“We are offering you personal assistance in completing the FAFSA application through our
Early Award Program. If you have already filed the CSS profile, we thank
you for providing this valuable information. If you have not filed your CSS
profile, and you choose to complete the FAFSA through our Early Award
Program, you will not need to complete the CSS Profile at this time. We
will reach out to you in the future if the additional information is required.”

@jonmo77
I interpret this the same way as you did. For all of us who received the early award letter it says it very clearly not to file the CSS profile at this time.

At this time…that’s the key…the schools website says all applicants must file both. In would still call.

I see the letter now. You are Early ea admits, so you circumstances are different from other ea admits.

It’s important that people realize that.

@gottagoworkout - you are right. I think they are leaving the door open to ask you for more information if necessary. Sorry to have caused any confusion.

Fordham requires both the FAFSA and CSS. CSS is normally filed first. FAFSA after the new year. But you can FAFSA early and update it later as well. Bottom line is both are needed to finalize your aid offer but the CSS is utilized for EA applicants for estimates of financial aid, subject to tax forms being provided and the FAFSA.

The FAFSA is required, I believe of all scholarship recipients who CHOOSE TO ATTEND FORDHAM AND ACCEPT THE SCHOLARSHIP.
