Does anyone remember/know the type of questions and the format of the placement test that the Gabelli school of business gives (FCRH students are welcomed to talk about their math placement exam too)...I took calc this year but I forgot a lot of the trig/precalc stuff so I would like to know the questions they ask and how they expect us to answer, etc.

bump bump bump bump bump

D took the test last night. 20 multiple choice, mixture of all topics. From her notes, I can see that there were algebraic expressions, some geometry, quadratic equations, functions. Time allotted: one hour. Took her about an hour to finish. Test does not give the results… Feels she did “fine”, whatever that means.

My D took the math placement test last year (FCRH) and she doesn’t have a great background in geometry, but did take Trig and Pre-Calc in HS. Thought she did “ok” but was placed in pre-calc because at that time she was going into the Pre-Health program. Turned out what she wanted to do in life didn’t require pre-med so she dumped the Pre-Health program and they put her into “Finite Math”, which does count toward the Math Core requirement. If she had stayed in Pre-Health, the Pre-Calc didn’t count, it was to make sure she knew what was going on because college calc is pretty hard.

Is there any trig…Or is it mostly algebra 2 and some geometry? (what do you mean by “some”) @mexusa @MomTheChauffer

From what she explained, it was similar to the math section of SAT, but only 20 questions. D called Fordham to find out when she would get results, told they will be available online after June 8th.
That’s all the info I have. There is a practice exam at the site. Do it, then take the real one. Good luck and stop worrying. You already got into Fordham and Gabelli.

D unhappy that she got placed in Pre-Calculus. Yet she got a B in both Pre-Calculus and Calculus at her HS.
So, now she has to take Finite next summer? or is there another way to work her schedule? She was planning on studying abroad next summer.
BTW, we have checked several universities around here and Fordham will not accept the only class available, as it is online (despite being a brick and mortar school).
Has anyone run into this and what is best way to get the summer available for going abroad?

Why can’t she just take finite in the fall (or even spring if necessary) of her sophomore year? That would allow her to go abroad in the summer. I don’t think finite math is a prerequisite for any other classes so there is no need to finish all the math classes up freshman year. Also when she gets on campus she can talk to her adviser during orientation and see if she can be moved (or if it would be wise to move) into calculus.
This is just a small bump along the road. Hope she loves Fordham!

Taking Finite in the fall sounds like a good plan, if it is not needed before that. I will have her contact the Dean about it. She has a few APs, so that may free her up to take it as a sophomore. Thanks!

spirit77: thanks, very helpful!

Happy to help!
