So I was admitted to Fordham honors with the dean’s scholarship and to NYU…
I know NYU is ranked much higher than Fordham, but I can’t find anything about Fordham’s honors program so I have no idea how to go about making this decision!
Any insight or advice will be greatly appreciated!
In the honors program at Lincoln Center, you are one of only about 16 students, so it is very hard to get in. Congratulations on that!! As an honors student, you have a different core than everyone else, fewer required classes, so you can have more time to possibly double major or major and minor. There are some honors classes that you take each semester, except during junior year when you are required to either study abroad or have an internship.
There is a senior thesis required for graduation. Usually written, although that depends on your major. My daughter is producing a concert in an off-Broadway theater (this monday night! tickets still available!) as her senior thesis. The honors program has been helpful to her in advertising it, helping with her printing, etc… Her adviser knows her personally because it’s a small program in a small school, although it is part of a huge University.
There is a room set aside only for the honors kids, just a place to go when you need it.
Have you visited both schools? My daughter thought for sure she wanted to go to NYU, we visited there and she liked it, but we made her also look at Fordham and the minute she stepped on campus, it clicked for her and she knew it was going to be Fordham. More of a campus than NYU, which is spread out over many city blocks. It just felt right for her. You have to visit to decide. Congrats again!!
was there a separate application for the honors program or was it based on your initial application?
@LeftyLou, thank you for answering so thoroughly!
I’ve been reading up on the honors program, and I keep coming across the words “restrictive,” “rigorous course load,” and “grade deflation.”
That kind of scares me; do you know to what extent this is true?
I can deal with (and expect) a rigorous course load, but restrictive is not really something I’m interested, and grade deflation could hinder my going to a good grad school…
Thanks again!
I’ll forward this to my daughter and see if she can answer when she has time.
I really need to start checking this form more often.
I am a current Honors LC student. I personally think the Honors program is the best way to experience Fordham.
Your core is tiny and more focused. Class difficulty varies but most are as hard as regular core classes. You get preferential treatment in various aspects of the school, free museums for your first two years (I think they are still doing that?)… really it’s not like other college’s honors programs. I’ve found it very laid back and flexible.
Let me know if you have any questions.
