Fordham or Northeastern?

As the final admission decisions have rolled in, I’ve narrowed my decision down to Fordham or Northeastern. Financial Aid and scholarships have made the two about the same price, just at the very top end of what I can afford. I’m also from Los Angeles, so I know that either way it will be a major change in scenery. If any alumni can give me information about either university it would be greatly appreciated. My #1 concern is a solid business program (with emphasis on entrepreneurial studies), but I also want to minor in political science with a possible political career in the future. Secondary concerns are social life and surrounding area. I know the Manhattan area very well, and like it slightly more than Boston, but I’ve never gone anywhere near Fordham, or anywhere north of around 115th street. Boston is still a fantastic city, and I’ve been to Northeastern once but don’t remember too much about it.

Hey! NEU student here -

Both are great academic schools for business, the co-op program is a big distinguishing factor - what are your thoughts and opinions of the program? It will offer great opportunities (50% of NEU students get full-time job offers from a co-op) and connections, especially for business. On the other hand, some prefer the more traditional academic model.

Both are going to offer great cities as their backyard - while it isn’t quite as easy to tell while touring NEU, it has one of the most central and close locations to downtown Boston with so many things to do, and is one of the best in the area IMO. Here’s some of the usual destinations and their travel times:

Fenway Neighborhood: 10 min walk
Newbury Street: 20 min walk
Prudential Center: 15 min walk or 5 min by T
North End: 210 min by T
Downtown: 15 min by T
Copley Square: 20 min walk or 10 min by T
Harvard Square: 40 min by T
BU’s Campus: 20 min walk
Chinatown: 10 min by T
Boston Commons: 10-15 min by T

You probably know Manhattan better than me (I’ve only been a few times) to compare, but I just wanted to highlight how many great areas are so close in Boston - being slightly smaller than NYC has the advantage of proximity.

If you have any questions on NEU I’d be happy to help

Hey! I say northeastern!!!

Two excellent choices. I can only speak to Fordham where my S had a great experience going to Gabelli at Rose Hill. He got a great education, made amazing friendships and loved being on a traditional campus that was so close to Arthur Ave and had easy access to Manhattan.

That said, if you want a co-op program Northeastern has one, but my S had no interest in the co-op model – he did fine by having summer internships and he did have roommates who did internships during the school year as well. And Fordham, as a Jesuit school, would likely have a larger liberal arts core curriculum.

No bad choice here. Just go with your personal preference.
