Fordham University EA Class of 2019!

Hey guys! My name's Fazeel and I applied EA to Fordham back in October. I decided to make this thread so we can post stats, decisions, and also have discussions here (for the future classes). Comment away if you applied EA to Fordham! Little bit about myself - I'm from VA and I applied to Lincoln Center as a Middle Eastern Studies major!

Hey Fazeel, I applied to RH for chemistry and I’m from NY. So last year the results came out on Dec 12th so if they follow that same time frame, then we should have it in 3 weeks

Also don’t forget to set up your my.fordham account, if you haven’t already done so.

I noticed they moved the EA decision notification date from 12/15 to 12/20 :(

Did they really? Where did you read/find this? Ughhhh I hate waiting :(( @kungFuGuy‌

Question - did you guys receive an email from Fordham last night, the Financial Aid Early Action Checklist? Does every EA applicant get this or only people who have a chance of getting accepted?

EA decisions are almost always on the week preceding Christmas. Nothing new here. Its agonizing, but be patient. And if you are deferred, dont despair. Take the offer of going into the RD pool and try again. They often take kids in RD that were deferred EA, because the EA crowd tends to be kids with uber stats and its super competitive. Usually over 10,000 applicants EA.

Good luck.

@fazeeeeeeel‌ , yea I got that financial aid checklist email as well. I’d like to say it means something, but I’m trying not to read too much into any college emails, unless it has the word “congratulations” in it lol

Oh wow, over 10k apps?! That’s a lot! Do you know the percentage of kids who get deferred from EA and then accepted in RD? @sovereigndebt‌

Same @Anduar3‌ lol I’m not trying to read too much into it but I was surprised to get another email from them :open_mouth: I really do hope it means something. Anyone else get this email or anyone who did not get one?

No. The overall acceptance rate for the entire process EA and RD combined is somewhere between 42-48% depending on the number of applications they receive year to year and the quality of applicants. The retention rate…the yield…of accepted students is below 10%, meaning over 90% of accepted students go elsewhere…because they applied to many schools and often pick the highest ranking school which accepts them (prestige hounds) and also because of cost (sadly many kids think schools give out free money to all accepted students. That is not true. They give out scolarships to the top 10% (give or take) of their applicant pool, and then give financial aid to those who qualify…but Fordham says it meets needs…when in fact they use student loans to meet needs. So many kids who get accepted cant accept that amount of debt and go elsewhere.) There are also kids who collect acceptance letters and had no strong intention of going to Fordham regardless…or even some who change their minds about going to college in New York City. Plenty of reasons.

The overall acceptance rate of EA is less than the overall rate for the process. I think a lot of students are deferred and only the “clearly not going to be accepted in RD regardless” type of kids are rejected outright. What percentage of deferred kids get in RD? I dont know. But they do take them, and it depends to some extent on the quality of applicants in the RD pool and how you (generically speaking) stack up against them. The matrix is not a hard and fast rule. It moves quite a bit year to year. My “guess” would be around 10%. Fordham gets over 35,000 applications a year. 10,000 in EA and another 25,000 RD. Some of those are reachers…people not clearly qualified and who are reaching…some of them reaching too far and get rejected. Some of them are safety schoolers…people who regard Fordham as safety and they are looking really to get into an Ivy…and some of them do. Or to a top 25 school. Some are clear matches for Fordham…a lot of them are clear matches and the commmittee must discern from their matrix who is a likely attendee (who will accept an offer of admission) and who is just collecting acceptance letters and who needs what in financial aid…and who can write a big check. And all sorts of other factors like diversity, who is a resident student and who is a commuter, who is coming from overseas. And then they make tough decisions. Dont forget that even though they take 42% or better of the applicants, many of those have superior grades and SAT’s. A very high percentage are in the top 10% of their high school class and an overwhelming number are in the top 25% of their class. Fordham leaves room for athletes, for PellGrant students and for specific targets in diversity.

If you are accepted EA, great. If you are deferred then send in MORE grades…that clearly helps, and send in a letter of your clear intentions…no phony talking points…so they know if you will come if admitted or not.

Fordham admits/enrolls a class of 1800 or so to Rose Hill and another 900 or so to Lincoln Center, though the expanded dorms at LC make room for more…so that may increase. Fordham knows that 90% or more will go elsewhere even if accepted. And the “yield” is approximately those 1800 and 900, respectively, that come from the accepted student pool. I know that a very few are accepted off the wait list in May. But that depends on late changes and sometimes offered to commuters. Hope this helps.

yes its complicated. Its college admissions. Good luck.

@fazeeeeeeel, it is under Apply Status. It said 12/15 before, now it says 12/20.
I also received the FA email.

@sovereigndebt‌ you’re right, it is all so complicated but thank you for breaking it down for us. I never really had the whole admission decision process explained. It makes you wonder how schools are able to do this in just a month.

Wow @sovereigndebt‌, that was an amazing post, best one I’ve read on CC yet! Very informative! Thanks for posting it, really answered some college admissions process questions and what not. If you don’t mind me asking - have you gone through the Fordham admission process, or were you a part of it? You seem pretty educated on all of this which is why I ask. Just curious!

Received reminder email for profile. Thinking that since child reported they would be applying for FA on app that was the reason for the reminder. Not thinking that FA and Admissions are connected yet. Hoping to be wrong, hoping it means something.

My daughter graduated from Fordham in 2011 Phi Beta Kappa. I’ve been through the process with my kids and my friend’s kids. I dont work for Fordham but I am familiar with general aspects of their process and know a lot of people there.

Fordham does their best to be fair and impartial and objective. BUT…there are many factors that go into admissions: diversity of region, race, gender, high school (public or private or parochial), financial picture (Fordham depends on tuition for revenues…they are solid…but not “loaded” like the Ivy League with BILLIONS). Legacy has slipped almost to obscurity as a factor at Fordham.

College admissions is a numbers game. Its sometimes cruel and cold. So make certain you apply to 3 reach, 4-5 match and 3 safety schools. NEVER pick a school that you cant see yourself attending, in case its the only one that lets you in. Fordham makes exceptions for some kids with lower scores…but rest assured, its not a charity service and they are very careful to consider how unfair it appears letting someone in with a 1150 SAT and deferring or rejecting someone with a 1250. If you are below the 50th percentile in Fordham’s applicant pool its not impossible to get in, but its a clear reach. They do consider the strength of your transcript and the reputation of your high school.

EA is a good place to start. But it also actually a bit tougher to get in. Because they can be uber picky and they get a high number of kids with UBER stats applying…who unfortunately use Fordham as a safety school (and then apply to Ivy Schools and see what happens.)

I dont know the breakdown on how many people get in EA with what GPA’s and SAT’s. In other words, how many are in the 90th percentile and how many are in the 75th percentile and so forth.

Good luck.

really?! @sovereigndebt I called admissions and they said they have the same acceptance rate for EA that they have for RD. Do you mean that its harder in the sense of stats; they have the same acceptance rate but higher stats for the admitted people? Thanks again for the informative post!

I dont know what the acceptance rate is specifically for EA as they dont generally post that, but I am suspicious that Admissions says its the same…I have heard anecdotally that it is not. Admissions employs students to answer phones and they have talkingpoints. Just saying.

Generally it is harder because the pool is often loaded with kids with uber stats. As I said before. Of course every year is a different pool and different stats. But this is getting into minutiae and really above most persons here.

I just received an email from Fordham telling me that they want to notify me in advance of the December notification that I was accepted, but I have to wait until December 20 to pay the deposit. Has anyone else received a similar email? Honestly this has been a shock.

@bedfordchild I just got the same thing and I’m in shock too
