Hi! So in 7th grade I took Spanish 1A, and in 8th grade I took Spanish 1B. How many more years do I need to take? I need three years worth, right? My old Spanish teacher said that I needed two more years, but the high school counselor said I needed one more year...?

Technically none (unless your school makes you take a certain number of years to graduate and/or a school you’d like to apply to requires a certain number of years). But I’d recommend at least one more year because most colleges like to see at least 2 (and in some cases 3) years of Spanish, so one more than the recommended/required amount is certainly a good idea.

If you really like foreign language, then take another after that too, because it’ll look even better.

(This is assuming middle school Spanish= high school credit for your school)

Most colleges will make you take a test proving your profeciency

I would take at least two more years. Most colleges want to see that you took at least two consecutive years of a foreign language in high school.

^ Yep.

You can either take some Spanish or pick up another language, but you need at least two or 3 units in a foreign language in high school.

^This isn’t always true.

A student could take no high school language classes, but colleges would be assuaged by, perhaps, an 800 on SAT II Random Language [No creativity here]

^ Really? Most schools have foreign languages as on the their education requirements.

^They’ve waived it in the past, they only have ‘fluency requirements’, so many bilingual students waive it without having ever taken a formal class in their respective language.

At least at Northwestern, UPenn and Columbia
