Is foreign language required as part of UCB’s general education? And also is history and political science at popular major at berkeley? and are those majors difficult?

if you dont have 3 years of foreign language in high school, then you are required to take it

As h-w-t-f said, the foreign langauge requirement can be fulfilled by having at least 3 years of the same foreign language in high school passed with a C-. You may also test out of the FL requirement through AP, IB, or SAT IIs.

what if i only took two years, but it was German3/4 and German 5/6? Does that in a way still count for three years?

Your transcript must show three seperate years of a foreign language, unless you took at a community college where you would only need 3 semesters of a foreign language.

Combination classes do not count.

my_acers: What level of German are you at? 5 or 6? That's more than three years; perhaps you can take the dept.'s German test and test out of it at CAL; or you can take AP German (if there is one) and SAT IIs in German (it's a little too late to take the latter and the last, but the former is still available).

well i took spanish 1/2 in 8th grade...and then in high school...i took spanish 3/4 and then spanish 5/6 .....and then i stopped...so i finished 3rd year and i stopped but all three years were not taken in high school ...would that be ok ?

The following is the FL requirement for L&S:

Before coming to Berkeley:
You may satisfy this requirement as follows:
[ul]
[]letter grade pf C- or hgiher in the third year of a high school foreign language
[]SAT II: Subject Test, Foreign Language; 590 or higher
[]AP Exam in a FL--Score of 3 or higher
[]GCE (General Certificate of Education) "A" or "O" Level Foreign Language Exam--Grade A, B, or C
[/ul]

So, since they didn't say 3 years at a high school, but rather a foreign language at the third year level in high school (example: French III at High school level), you should be exempt from it.

In other words, ignore my earlier post (#5) about 3 separate years of a foreign language on your transcript, etc. You just need to have a language at the third year level with a C- or better.

I'd say even if you did it in HS, do any language 1-4 (or equivalent, departments vary) for $hits and giggles. They are generally pretty easy, a lot of fun, and for a 5 unit class, they don't take a whole lot of time. (Think study an hour a night, trust me, you will have classes where that's not even scratching the surface) and you'll get a much better grasp of ANY language you take here than you would in ANY high school course.

(sorry for the vulgarity)
