I remember there were several discussions about foreign language requirements, and people, including me, were really confused what 2 years proficiency means.

Also, from our personal experience this year.

Any intensive language course is a nightmare. Be prepared for minimum 4 hours homework EVERY DAY, if you want a good grade.

There are usually few freshmen in foreign language classes, and it is not easy to register, especially for popular languages, because upperclassmen have priority in registration. If you managed to register as freshmen for an intensive class, you’d better take 12 credit hours instead of 15, the amount of homework/studying is enormous.

Some foreign languages are easier than others. The easiest languages from the list above are Germanic. They are very similar to English in grammar and vocabulary. Next easiest group of languages is Latin based, they are in 3 groups in the list above - Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese. Everything else is much more challenging.
