I heard that if you take three years of foreign language in high school, you are cleared of your foreign language college requirements at UT, The University of Texas at Austin. Is that still true? and will it change anytime soon?

Also, do one of the classes have to be AP or Honors or anything like that?

That’s what I thought as well, but it depends on what your college/major is. I had three years of Spanish in high school. The College of Communication requires proof of proficiency to the 2nd year of a foreign language, not just that the courses were taken. So I had a choice of either testing out (registering, paying for and taking a proficiancy test at UT to determine what my Spanish proficiency was and/or determine what Spanish class to place me in if I wasn’t proficient to the 2 years) or taking either Spanish or a different foreign language at UT (2 semesters of a 6-credit foreign language so the two years can be condensed into one). But the different colleges at UT have different requirements, so it’s best to check with a counselor in your particular major/college as to that college’s particular requirements.

What you “heard” is actually UT admission requirement, and it is 2 required years or 3 recommended years of foreign language.
If an admitted student doesn’t meet this requirement he/she has to take a foreign language course 506 and 507 (or the equivalent) or earn a passing score on the appropriate placement examination given by the University.

If you took 2 or 3 years of foreign language at school and your major doesn’t require foreign language as a part of core curriculum you can file a request for waiver of foreign language deficiency. You can use American Sign Language as foreign language.

You have to check your major for additional foreign language requirements, they are usually included in core curriculum of specific major as additional classes.

Usually technical BS majors like engineering or CS will not require any additional foreign language.
Humanitarian BS as Communication or technical BA as CS will usually require 2 additional years of proficiency in foreign language (can be fulfilled by taking 601 & 611 intensive courses).
American Sign Language is excluded from the list of foreign languages.

No, it is not correct. 2 years of foreign language proficiency is a requirement of many majors. WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR?

If you took foreign language AP/IB class and TEST and got grades high enough to get college credit you don’t need to take foreign language again.

Computer Science Bachelor of Science (1 year of foreign language that can be substituted by 1 year of cultural courses taught in English, )
Computer Science Bachelor of Arts (2 years of foreign language)

If you want to know for sure if you need foreign language or nor you have to tell your major. Each and every major has some kind of adjustment to core curriculum which includes additional classes in different areas.
