I am interested in participating in the Scholars program because I like the idea of a tight-knit group with similar interests (I am particularly interested in the STEM Exploration group). But at the same time I also want to join a fraternity (please don’t reply with rants about why frats are “bad”, I’m not looking to start a debate) so would these two come into conflict a lot? Is is too much to try to participate in both?
I am in highschool but if I remeber correctly, osu doesn’t “officially” rush till spring so you have time to adjust. I know people in both, don’t stress it at all!
I didn’t know that! Thanks!
Maybe someone else can confirm that?
My D is a sophomore - in scholars and in a sorority. Both have been excellent for her. She rushed in the Spring of freshman year. Not sure if all is the same with a frat but she has managed to balance academic and social quite nicely. Sometimes you have to say no to the fun stuff and prioritize. It’s definitely doable.
@new2osu I’ve always been pretty good with organization and time management so I think I should be able to do it. Thanks for the post!
My son is a freshman in the business scholars program. There is no rushing of the social fraternities until spring. The scholars program has been a win win for my son. He immediately made a tight group of friends that he eats with and goes to the games with. In addition the requirement of living with the scholars helps the big school become more like a community. It is certainly doable to also join a fraternity. There are required weekly meetings with the scholars program but ample time to become involved in other organizations. You won’t hear this mom scoff at fraternities. My sorority sisters are my closest college friends that I have and made my college experience even stronger.
@dmconn I really like how they don’t rush until spring, that’s really neat. And I’m glad to hear that your experience was good! While I do think there are some issues with frats, I think the vast majority of the time they do far more good than bad and I think it would be very beneficial to me. Thanks for the post!
Also, the fraternities at Ohio State are much more academically focused than a lot of the other big schools. Obviously I am not saying that to offend anyone, but I know multiple in fraternities at both Osu And Psu and the ones at OSU are much more focused.
