and could you also provide info on each dorm--the goodm the bad, the ugly?

I guess this is similar to this thread:

What benefits/drawbacks are there to joining a fraternity? Is it generally worth it, or just a waste of time?

jmw123,
i appreciate your responding.
would you be so kind as to provide the link to the referred to thread?
thanks

Oh, lol. I was just saying my question was similar to this thread, so I'd just post it here. Wasn't an actual link. Sorry.

bump
anybody?

I'd also like to ask know how predominant greek life is on campus.

sherbear lol sorry no one is actually giving you any answers... just more questions =)

Won't the two new freshmen dorms being constucted on eagle row be finished next fall?

For all incoming freshmen, there will be plenty of time for you to get to know the fraternities (and sororities) much better. Recruitment does not occur until the Spring semester. About 30% of students affiliate with the Greek system at Emory.

Meanwhile, see this link for more info. regarding Emory's fraternities and sororities: http://www.emory.edu/GREEKS/index.html

Norcaldad.
of course there's plenty of time.
these queries helped to shift the focus and alleviate some of the waiting energy.
now that my S got accepted, we've got plenty to think about.
thanks or the link.

chi phi- kind of a conglomerate.
dtd- "dorks that drink"... did not have rush this year, got their house torn down last year
ka- redneck frat... stereotype isnt completely true though.
kappa sig- off campus frat, decent mix of people, but small and kinda dull.
phi delt- cool guys, big conglomerate. smokers. big pledge class every year.
pi kappa phi- boring as hell, off campus.
sae- southern/international frat... cool guys, their sophomore class is boring as hell.
sig chi- soccer players... kinda preppy but by and large cool guys.

hope that helped.

interesting and cool screen name.
today is james joyce's bday.
has recruitment begun yet?
will u rush?
if so, where'd u be interested in?
do guys live in the houses?
r they nice?

thanks for the candid take on the frats.
do both guys and girls vie the frats similarly?
i really appreciate ur time!

For the record, that's probably the most stereotypical description that I've ever seen. Almost none of those houses live up to those stereotypes.

Don't believe what you read, just wait and make your own decision.

regarding housing, I live in Complex, and it's generally nice- tons of people live in Complex or Harris, so you'll probably be close to some friends. The downside is the longer walk to get anywhere other than the library.
But next year I think the new residence halls will be open. I'd suggest trying to get into those.

Did anyone else find daedalus' description disturbing? One of the things I liked about Emory was the diversity and open mindedness. I found his descriptions of his fellow students to be racist and close minded. Very disturbing. Is this what Emory students are like? I am not Jewish, but am now wondering if there is a lot of anti-Semitism on campus? It's just not something I have come in contact with in my life.

band.....ignore it

anti-semitism? is that a joke? everyones jewish, and if you arent, you will undoubtedly have jewish friends.

and i happen to agree with the stereotypes of the frats. all of my friends are in sig chi, sig nu and aepi and theyre the ****, but, they are categorized....

like is said about hte sororities, you have to make your own decision and this year, hte pledge classes for every frat are INCREDIBLE and people i expected to be in one frat are in another and its just where you feel comfortable!!!

"obnoxious jews" "long island jews" yeah, I consider that a pretty lowbrow remark.....no joke....

2hot2handle: just because there's a large percent of a group doesn't mean that they are automatically accepted by everyone. Just take the countless high schools around the U.S. where there are 30%+ black and 30%+ white and one can still find quite a bit of racial tension between the two groups in certain areas.

That said, I'm hoping Emory isn't that immature, and I don't think it will be.

And if those stereotypes are accurate, as you say, who would want to join such a lame group? You have "obnoxious, square, druggies(but hey, they are cool druggies), alcoholic dorks, rednecks, dullards, smokers, bores, jerks, more bores and cocky guys". This an accurate depiction of the frats? OMG. I can't wait to join. I bet the girls are all over them.

You answered your first question with your last comment... Those are only stereotypes, take it easy everyone, Greek Life at Emory is an integral part of the social life here. Whether or not it is for you will be something you assess at Emory and not on this website. Get to college, meet people, talk to people, and then you'll figure out, relatively quickly, the type of people and/or frat you'd like to associate with.
