Fraternities and Dorms at Emory

those descriptions were pretty much the stereotypes. i know people in frats that fit the stereotype.. and i know many people that don't. but there are some (i believe) accurate statements that id like to add
pi kappa phi- new frat, just started this year. it seems like a lot of them wouldn't have gotten bids at rush so they started their own frat.
zbt- really small (half the people living in their house aren't even a brother) nice overall.
ato- everyone seems to want to be in it but their parties aren't anything special. the most academically minded frat, they do the most volunteering too. they also have the most openly gay guys of all the frats (not that there's anything wrong with homosexuality - it's just what they're known for)

dorms:
(freshman)
freshman 2&3- new, just being built this year, eco-friendly, look amazing and i would strongly recommend
new turman- just built last year, also eco-friendly, new. they have a 'citizenship program' where you do a lot more activities and programs than other halls. i think you have to apply to get in..?
alabama- I think this might be upperclass next year. it has some triples. convenient since it's in the middle of campus
mctyeire- also pretty close to the duc, and to frat row. the rooms arent a bad size. kind of old..
complex- all doubles. its well lit and the rooms are pretty nice. thomas hall (all girls) is really boring though, the girls tend to be way conservative to the point of not having fun. but theres a huge amount of people living in complex & harris so you're sure to have lots of friends nearby
harris- gray walls, a little depressing inside. lots of singles so there isnt much hall community, but there are LOTS of people here. room size is decent
trimble- they might put some freshman in here next year depending on the class size. the rooms are kind of small and its old but not bad overall.

overall I would say to try for the new dorms, those are likely to be about ten times better than the old ones.
also, don't underestimate walking distances. you will grow to hate the walk to the bio building if you are taking bio and you live in complex or harris. just a thought.

just a note.. in my experience there is NOT a lot of anti-Semitism at Emory, there are a ton of jewish people here and I think that just leads to stereotyping. people don't actually hate jews or anything like that.. but there is a certain degree of stereotyping if you dress a certain way.. ie. japs

In the interest of full disclosure, I am in a fraternity at Emory. I will say that joining a fraternity was probably the best decision I made in college. It completed my college experience, and I think most other guys on campus, regardless of their fraternity affiliation, would echo those sentiments.

However, in no way should what you read in an online forum influence your decision to join (or not join) a fraternity. I have plenty of friends who never joined a fraternity, or who joined other fraternities, and come over to my house all the time to hang out, and vice versa.

If you end up going to Emory, try and actually meet the guys in the fraternities before you decide to pigeon-hole them. There will be guys in every fraternity you like and dislike. In the end, you join the fraternity where you like, and the feel the most comfortable, around the most people.

And in response to the above posts:
sigchi-soccer players, swimmers, and golfers. kind of preppy, but nice guys in general.
chi phi-lot of different kids...don't know what else to say
sig nu-on the upswing, baseball players, basketball players. good parties
ato-track and cross country, some a capella groups. very involved in campus orgs and philanthropy

One thing that bothered me about the above post was the gay comment made about ato. To my knowledge, there are only 3 guys who are gay in the entire 60 or 70 something house. every house has at least one gay guy (including mine), in fact the president of aepi is gay. the whole argument/stereotype is unreasonable in my opinion. moving on...

beta-chill guys, like to smoke
ka-decent guys. southern "gentlemen" of the fraternity world...
sae-cool kids, got a great pledge class this year, some swimmers. things are looking up for them. they have a pool in their backyard.
phi delt-an amalgamation. track, some other sports, pretty cool guys. kind of in trouble right now for a party they threw a while back.
zbt- nice jewish guys. no longer small. They got a pledge class of 17 guys and now number over 50 kids...in house that has 23 beds.
aepi-tend toward more new york-based jews. good guys though, involved on campus and in the community. highest gpa on the row

Also, every frat including the "christian frats" have lots of Jews in them. Emory is a very diverse school in every way imaginable, and if you can't handle that, its probably not the right school for you.
