Fraternities and Sororities

I was recently admitted to Michigan, and it's one of my top choices. I was wondering if any current or former students have any comments they could like to make about the Frats and Sororities, specifically reputations, houses, etc..

Any information would be appreciated.

reputations for frats:
1 Phi Psi, 2 SAE, 3 Pike
reps for sororities:
1 Tri Delt, 2 Kappa, 3 Alpha Phi

Thanks. Anybody else have anything to add?

I would like to know the same. Here is a website I've found months ago, and now found it again.

Greek Life at the University of Michigan

Ok so here is a general overview of greek life at umich
disagree with me all you want but the vast majority of people would probably say that I am more than partially correct.

Before I go into this a little heads up. No greek house is bad and for all of you who are anti-greek, you should NOT post here. Some people want to get a feel for greek life and it is unfair for you to sway them not only before they get on campus but also before rush.

1st Tier
SAE, Phi Psi

1.5 Tier
Theta Chi

2nd Tier
Fiji, Pike, AEPi

3rd Tier
Chi Phi, Psi U

4th Tier
Sammy (SAM), Shady(ADPhi), SigEp

5th Tier
DKE, Delta Chi, Chi Psi

The tier system is not an exact science. But its a little bit attractiveness, little bit word of mouth, little who they mix with, little how their parties are, a little on how hard it is to get into their parties.
Every frat is different and not everyone will like the top tiers. When you get to campus you'll figure it out. Pike has a ton of open parties, SAE wont have a lot.

If you want to know what specific frats are like just let me know

Sororities

1st tier
Tridelt, Alpha Phi

2nd Tier
Kappa, Skrappa

3rd Tier
AXO, DG, theta

4th Tier
SDT Chi-O ADPi

5th
Pi Phi, DPhiE, AGD

And there you go

Wow, thanks Seventeentwenty. That was more than I expected. I know they tell you to keep an open mind when you rush, but I like to have a little backround information before I get in there. Which frats party the most? Which frats haze the most? Can you give me a sentance or two about the types of guys in the frats that are in the first few tiers? Any information is appreciated.

Also, if anyone wants to respectfully disagree with Seventeentwenty about any of these reputations, that's cool too.

I would be careful about forming any opinions based on rankings you read on the internet. Which fraternity or sorority is right for you is a matter of personal preference. There are also special interest fraternities and sororities (engineering, business, pre-law, Christian, multi-cultural) outside of the ones previously mentioned that you may want to consider. Hope you find your place!

I was just having a conversation about fraternity life, and types of fraternities. Anyone know a website I could find more information about fraternities?

College OTR: Michigan Greek Mythology: The List (2008)

Does anybody have information on Zeta Psi Fraternity. I think it's one of the smaller fraternities. I haven't seen it mentioned on any of the lists.

which fraternities are located on the north campus?

Fraternities aren't located on North Campus.

It’s taken a while but the OTR descriptions are pretty on except they take on a GDI attitude that proves why there is such a distaste for one another greeks and GDI’s

that being said I’ll give you a few profiles since I am bored and don’t feel like studying.

SAE- Haze a lot. Expect a long pledge term. That being said they pull a lot of good girls and most would consider them the frattiest although 98% of michigan thinks they are D-bags. Hate Phi Psi

Phi Psi- A less meathead version of SAE. Used to be a lot preppier but now has calmed down and there are a decent amount of Jewish guys in the house. Hate SAE. Pull about the same girls as SAE. Haze a bit but not as much as SAE

Theta Chi- Lot of NY guys. Don’t know so much about them but had a couple friends join. Pretty chill smoke a bit. They threw a pretty big st. patty’s day party with SAE this year. Haze same as phi psi roughly. Mainly go for top girls but I am told they hang with a lot of jewish sorority girls.

PIKE (Pi kapp Alpha)- Tons of guys. Throw a lot of open parties and if you are a freshmen you will be there at some point during welcome week. That being said after freshmen year they become less appealing and some would said toolish. No hazing but people think they aren’t legit because they barely know all the bros in the hosuse. Have ok pull with girls but mostly freshmen.

FIJI (phi gama delta)- Boy scouts of greek life. Don’t throw a ton of open parties but they have some good ones. they are mainly known for doing a ton of charity. Not the biggest drinkers but their house is sick(good).

AEPi -Jewish house don’t know too much about pledging but i dont think its a walk in the park from what I hear.

Chi Phi- A declawed version of SAE is the phrase I like best. Haze a little. Do pretty good girlwise but not as good as SAE or Phi Psi. Pretty nice guys I am having trouble grouping them in one category. Their house is one of the nicer ones but not as good as fiji though.

Psi U- Mostly connecticut guys. Smoke a lot. Do well with the jewish sororities. They haze some which is a little surprising to me since they aren’t coveted like other fraternities.

The rest are good in their own right
anymore questions?

so i’m possibly transferring to michigan and i’m thinking of going greek. my friend is in dphie but i have some aephi connections as well? opinions? i heard that dphie was losing their house after this year but that might just be a rumor…

They are losing it. Go to rush and make a decision for yourself. Unlike frat rush, during sorority rush you are required to visit all the houses. Don’t listen to potentially biased people on the internet. The most important part about joining a house is which you see yourself fitting in with best i.e. which girls you like the best and can see being friends with.

yes, dphie is losing the house that they are currently in because zeta just returned to campus and they own the house, dphie was just renting it from them, dphie is is getting a new house, they are moving into triangle, and it is getting completely redone.

how unlikely is it to rush as a junior? I just got accepted as a transfer and would like to rush… is it too late?

can anyone give a general overview of greek life at umich? how competitive is rush for girls, how hard is it to get into a good sorority, and generally how intense is greek life? also, what is the general perception of greeks from the non-greek perspective?

Is there an updated overview of the sororities? The last one was from over two years ago. Also, do the sororities haze much?

wow…lol…this is good
