Fraternity/Sorority Rush + Rankings

I have seen a lot of posts about greek life on here so I decided to make an account just to express how I feel about greek life.

I am a UM freshman in a top sorority and this list has been comprised based off of other people’s opinions as well as my own.

Girls, sorority rush is practically predetermined. The better the sorority, the prettier the girls. They will look at you, talk to you (to make sure you’re normal), then stalk your facebook. If you rush, you’ll get into somewhere guaranteed.

Top: Alpha Phi, Tridelt, Kappa
Upper Mid: Theta, Skrappa, AXO
Bottom Mid: Chi O, DG, ADpi
Bottom: SDT, Pi Phi, Zeta
Bad: AEphi, AGD

This list is how the sororities appear to be relative to each other. I know cooler girls in ADpi and Zeta that ‘should’ be in places like Kappa or AXO. Its not an exact science.

Boys, for fraternity rush is very different. It not all about the hottest profile picture, it’s more about who you are. I decided to make a list of all the places that are in the greek social circle.

IMPORTANT:
I’d recommend you check out one tier 1, one tier 2, and one tier2/3. This way you can make sure you get in to something good and have enough time to spend at each place.

Some guys friends of mine who weren't tier 1 material only rushed tier 1s and didn't get a bid. They joined another one in winter but would have been better off diversifying in fall.

Tier 1 (born a frat star)

Phi Psi – “god’s gift to frat” “best football pregame”
This place has earned its spot as best frat at umich. Only take well-rounded kids, not necessary the most attractive, athletic, or tallest, but someone who good at beer pong, wears preppy clothes, and can chat up chicks. A lot of the kids here are rich west/east coast out of state kids. Anyone in this frat will have sorority (and geed) girls eating out of their hands guaranteed.
Rush tips: usually have beer pong event to weed out bad kids. Aside from wearing expensive clothes, I recommend you get really good at beer pong from them to notice you.

SAE – “meatheads” “southern frat”
This place is not part of IFC anymore (because of hazing) but a lot of my friends (girls) love them. They have a reputation as a bada$$ frat on campus and the guys are big football players in high school who want to get into business or some ****. They host mudbowl which is a football game except you play in a pool of mud against other fraternities. Pledge term is not a walk in the park.
Rush tips: show them you are bad ass but not criminally insane

Pike – “sorority frat” “party party party”
Pike gets girls. They focus all of their time in energy in their parties. Brotherhood appears almost non-existent and if you want to party and frat up at night and have other **** going on during the day this frat is right for you. Rushing here is like sorority rush, it doesn’t matter what you say or how you’re awesome person; if you’re not hot you’re not in.
Rush tips: show up, wear flat rim hat or style your hair, stand up straight to look taller, talk about how you eat healthy organic food, stay in shape through your workout routine, girls who chase you and they’ll bid you if you’re attractive and not awkward enough

Theta Chi – “awkward kids” “stoners”
Your typical theta chi is a short gimp from Maryland who somehow developed a lot of confidence in high school. The guys here mostly have an east coast attitude and really enjoy weed (and harder drugs). A lot of the other sororities and fraternities don’t understand what makes them cool other than the fact that they ‘just are’. If you’re not looking to be fratty but still want to be a top tier , this is the place for you.
Rush tips: just be chill, talk about cool * you’ve done, just have a lot of confidence and act like you don’t take *
without coming off as offensive

FIJI – “lax bros” “respectable fraternity”
Right next to pike without their amazing looking house is Fiji. Fiji isn’t your typical frat. They stay out of greek drama/politics and maintain a solid rep on campus. They aren’t TOO big on partying (try to keep their house nice?) but still throw great parties when they do. Brotherhood is solid, they have kids who were SAE material but with softer hearts or Pike potentials who wanted more brotherhood. Lots of lax players means lots of bro-ing out

AEpi “jews” “normal guys”
All I can think to say is their alright. Mostly jewish kids (but not entirely). Throw pretty good parties and have ski trips with top sororities. One thing I’d like to add is that most AEpi kids don’t come as being in a frat. They just seem like normal guys. So that one kid sitting next to you in lecture, probably in AEpi. That one kid in front of you in the dining hall line? probably AEpi. The guy you’ve been friends with for half a semester you thought was a geed? AEpi. A lot of girls I know say ‘meh’ whenever someone says AEpi. meh

Tier 2 (not born a frat star but cool)

SigEp “sports social club” “try hards”
I would like to call lil Fiji, but that is simply not the case. A lot of the other fraternities rip on this place cause they don’t technically have a pledge term and jokes about cargo shorts. Still they have solid guys (mostly athletes from high school and fantasy football dorks) but they do throw pretty nice parties at 611. Lots of brothers = a decent amount of awkwards but that’s with anyplace really. They appear to be improving their relationship with sororities (cause of a couple really hot guys) and could be on the rise.

Sammy “lil AEpi” “sassy gay friend”
Pretty much everything I said about AEpi applies here. They aren’t as ******y and are generally nicer though. If you’re more about making friends with lots of people (but not hooking up), this is a good place. They are generally respected for being so nice (not quite as much as Fiji). However, some kids are kinda weird looking (hence jew) and a little obnoxious but still a nice house. Girls I know come here on nights they don’t really want to hook up.

Psi U “lil Theta Chi” “******y”
Personally I don’t like Psi U, but they are still pretty good in terms of reputation. Kinda lazy mindset like theta chi and have a rough pledge term. Other than a couple of hunks, the other guys are all short scrawny pot heads. None the less, their house is gorgeous and the guys are pretty funny. They have selective parties and don’t typically let other people (guys) in.

Tier 2/3 (good places to rush as backups? Pretty generic places)

DKE “presidential frat” “smart-alecs”
Something like six presidents have been dekes like geroge w bush, his dad, and that one guy who wasn’t even elected. Their house is off from your typical frat locations and people don’t generally say much about them. However they have cool guys (apparently) and regularly mix with sororities. Friends say they generally go for a fun time (kinda like Sammy) but when I’ve been there a lot of the guys were being smart asses. Kind of have a mix of every type of person but not as big of a mix as Chi Phi.

Chi Phi “chill frat” “mix pit”
I call Chi Phi the mix pit. They have some of the coolest and some of the weirdest. Still, like sammy and deke, fun place to go to and socialize. A lot of the guys would bring up a group of us to their room and just smoke, talk, and chill. Really fun times here if you hang out with the right half people. The guys at the same time have class, wear business shirt and tie but aren’t the smartest or too big on school.

Tier 3 (last resort for being in a place with rep)

Chi Psi “gentleman frat”
Throw fun open parties right next to south/west quad. Guys are kinda stuck up though and their appears to be a lot of tension just within the house itself. Don’t really seem happy much but still have decent rep and classy gentlemen-esque attitudes.

ADphi “shady”
Poor place got a bad name. Not the most motivated in school, but have a volleycourt and will be an eye grabber during welcome week. Don’t fall victim to it though, its not that good and not that impressive. Guys are man whores.

I’m not saying the other 20 or so frats at umich are bad, but they’re just not in the social scene like these ones. If greek life is something you want to be part of, you’ll be better off (and very happy) in ANY of the above fraternities.

Hope this helps! :)

Wow as a parent and alum from the late 70’s early 80’s all I can say is things are really different now. Pretty funny.

This is very accurate. You’re description of Theta Chi is too true, don’t really know why they still pregame with tier 1 but the girls always say yes so…good for them? And I guess if you’re going to include SAE then you should put down ZBT as another off campus (and jewish) fraternity. They group in somewhere with the DKE and Chi Phi crowd. It’s also worth noting that Phi Psi is losing their state street house next year which will make their football tailgates a lot less popular.

haha very accurate list, everything is so true. Didnt realize how big greek life was here is til I got here, i swear every decently social person is part of it

is sophomore rush frowned upon? my parents aren’t too keen on letting me pledge as a first year.

^Lots of people rush sophomore year. I would say that anything later than sophomore year rush is frowned upon.

Anything later than fall semester of sophomore year rush is frowned upon imo.

michgreek, do you mind giving a tiny profile of some of the sororities like you have for the fraternities? I mean I know they’re all pretty alike, but what makes each one different from the others?

I’ve been wondering that too, about more detail in the sorority rankings. I’ve never had the slightest interest in going greek but I have a few close friends from high school at Michigan in sororities like AGD so I’m wondering why those sororities are apparently so bad!

Can I join a frat as a freshman and if I can how do I do join?

GAgirl- they’re really all essentially the same, with slightly decreasing attractiveness as you move down the list. All you really need to know are the jewish sororities at UM are Theta, ChiO, and SDT. Otherwise, as michgreek said, they pretty much just care how hot you are.

“Can I join a frat as a freshman and if I can how do I do join?”

Unlike sororities, you can rush fraternities both spring and fall.

What is the rush process like?

rush process= [West Coast Report: Fraternity Rush - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

^It’s not like that. Jimmy Tatro is not what most fraternity men are like at Michigan. Rush is essentially going to get free dinner and talk to a bunch of guys to see if they like you. If they do they may just give you a bid or invite you to a private rush event to interrogate you a little more.

lol yea that was just a joke

this kind of detail of the kinds of ppl in the frat and what to expect them to judge you on etc is amazing but i thought u said u were in a sorority so could you give a similar explanation of the sororities instead of just the rankings??

Pike rules!

I know everyone hates to admit it, but…there IS a distinct ranking/tier system of sororities at UMich. Going greek is a great decision; the way rush works is that every girl who rushes is guaranteed a spot at a house (like OP said), although it may not be their top choice. On bid day, there were a ton of girls coming out of the Union screaming with joy, and others that were close to having a mental breakdown…
Girls rank their sororities, and sororities rank the girls, and a match is made that way. Panhel council is strict about infractions, dirty rushing, breaking the “vow of silence”, etc. All in all, Greek Life is fun, provides lots of opportunities for networking and fun, and is a great way to make this huge university seem smaller.

Social standing is a mix of how attractive the girls are, who your pregame partner is, who you party with, and the general disposition and personalities of the girls.

Tier 1:
Tri Delt, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Phi

tri delt - reputation on campus is “if your girlfriend won’t put out, tri delt”. They are very stereotypical, have a lot of pretty girls, gorgeous house, but a lot of people don’t take them seriously at all. Pregamed with phi psi this year: they wanted to pregame with SAE next year, but they are PERMANENTLY kicked off campus, thus this would be a huge no-no for the girls. Got asked by aepi, but are hesitant to say no or yes since they would just say yes for the sake of having a pregame partner at all.

kappa - also known as “visa visa mastercard”: very wealthy girls, approximately half Jewish. They also have a lot of gorgeous girls, but they are definitely NOT the nicest or most welcoming. It tends to be be very cliquey within the house. They hazed this year but didn’t get caught. Their reputation is iffy - this year there was a mini-scandal when one of their pledges had sex with a guy on the dance floor during a mixer. Pregamed with theta chi this year, will pregame with phi psi next year.

alpha phi - honestly, the phis that I’ve met are very catty and obsessed with their “rank” and image as a whole. Known to have quite a number of slutty girls. On the whole, they’re very attractive and have a good mix of Jewish/non-Jewish girls and in-state/out-of-state girls. Pregamed with SAE this year, will pregame with theta chi next year.

These three houses are, in general, always in “competition” with each other to be the top and it really drags high school melodrama ideologies into college. They do party with the top fraternities and have chock-full social calendars, but don’t be consumed by their social standing when choosing a house.

Tier 2:
Alpha Chi Omega, Sigma Kappa, Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Theta

axo - great, gorgeous girls. Known to have a lot of funny girls. Mostly girls from Michigan. Their reputation is that they party, but don’t necessarily “put out” and are such branded as the “friend zone” sorority or the “wife-it-up” sorority. They seem really well-rounded, except for the fact that they have, at most, only 3 Jewish girls. This year, they pregamed with pike then somehow became obsessed with FIJI and will be pregaming with them next year.

sigma kappa - very similar to axo, except their reputation is for being the best drinkers on campus and partying VERY hard. They’re known to be a ton of fun and laid back. They have a great house, but the location is terrible. Pregamed with FIJI this year, will pregame with pike next year.

chi o - exactly like the Jewish version of axo - pregamed with sammy last year, the year before, the year before that, and will pregame with sammy next year, and probably for all of eternity to come. A lot of girls pref both axo and chi-o before finding out that chi o is mostly Jewish/or axo is barely Jewish. Highest GPA on campus.

theta - straight up East coast JAPs that all look the same, talk obnoxiously, and are not very well-liked except by themselves and other JAPpy fraternities (sig, ZBT). Pregamed with aepi this year - were DETESTED by aepi - and do not have a pregame partner for next year (which poses a problem to them). Were almost kicked off campus for exclusively bidding Jewish girls, when they are really a Christian sorority nationally.

Tier 3:
Delta Gamma, Zeta Tau Alpha, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Phi Epsilon, Sigma Delta Tau, Alpha Delta Pi

DG - really sweet girls. Their reputation is known as “delta grandma” but they are relatively drama-free and seem to get along great and throw great philanthropy events. They pregamed with sigep this year, will pregame with sigep next year as well.

zeta - up and coming (they were recently reinstated after being kicked off campus). It’s usually a hit or miss - some girls are great, others are a little strange. This might be because the founding pledge class has not graduated yet and they are still are a little shaky during rush. Did not have a pregame partner this year - are currently being fought over by phi delt and DKE this year.

pi beta phi - see adpi!

dphie - Jewish girls that didn’t get into chi o or theta end up here. VERY Jewish, but they are also very involved and their newest pledge class seems very close.

SDT - again, Jewish girls that didn’t get into chi o or theta end up here. VERY jappy - again, their pledge class seems really tight-knit and they do a lot of activities together. Pregamed with psi u this year, not sure about next year.

adpi - not very well known (this isn’t good or bad) but they have a pretty clean reputation and nice, friendly girls. I would say their reputation is “wholesome”.

Tier 4:
Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Gamma Delta

aephi - extremely awkward girls, very small pledge class. They recently came back on campus after getting kicked off for hazing, partying, etc. and are going to need a few years to rebuild themselves. To be honest, they are really sweet and kind - but rarely have parties, are always made fun of by top/middle fraternities, and have a hard time filling up slots during rush.

agd - reputation is “alpha grab a donut”. They have a strange mentality that they are ranked higher and are more popular than they really are. Very similar to aephi, except the girls that I’ve met in agd are obsessed with “moving up”. They serenade other fraternities (when it is usually the other way around…) to try to schedule mixers. I feel like agd is a mix of girls who didn’t get into their top picks, but were still desperate to be a part of greek life.

DISCLAIMER:
I didn’t mean to sound *****y or condescending during this post - I am just trying to tell it like it is. If I sugarcoated things, it wouldn’t be helpful to those that want to know the actual truth. Keep in mind when rushing that the tiers DON’T MATTER - what matters is if you like where you are and you can look around at the other girls in the house and say “I can see us being friends for the next four years”. I didn’t want to sound biased either - Greek life has a lot of pros and cons that are debatable. To non-Greeks, Greek life is a stupid excuse for partying and “paying for friends”. To Greeks, it doesn’t seem like that at all.

I’m going to be a freshman and I’m really interested in joining a frat. I only know the basics of frat terminology. I know what rushing, hazing is. Can someone who knows a lot about umich frats, help me pick one? I know I still need to look at it myself during the first week of school which is when all houses throw parties to try to recruit.

I see that Phi Si, SAE, Pike, Fiji, Psi U, and SigEp are considered prestigious frats… Which is their actual name, if the have, that is located on the Umich Frat website: [Chapters | greeklife.umich.edu](http://greeklife.umich.edu/chapters/listing) there are 3 Alpha Phi’s…

From reading the description my top 3, according to my ‘style’ would be Phi Si (although most prestigious haha), Pike or possibly Fiji.
Also, I am indian, is there still a chance to get in one of the top/uppermid frats?

The closest thing I am to a frat guy is where preppy clothes, sort of outgoing (can talk to girls), I started working out (right now I am basically above twig status :(), good at beer pong, and am relatively tall (6’1), what other factors should I be aware of?
