<p>I was wondering if someone could maybe posts like a general idea of which frats are upper tier and which ones are not. I'm a freshman who is going to rush, but doesn't know at all about each frats campus rep</p>

The frat mentioned above costs about $1000 per semester. This means that it includes a meal plan thats "better" than the food found in campus and a place to live as well. I talked to a student who's part of Sigma Phi Epsilon and says that its cheaper living in the frat than on campus.
In addition, you can cancel your meal plan and dorm fees once you join.

<p>I don't really want to say much because I don't know the frats as well as other posters on here, so I'll wait til they answer.</p>
<p>i mean, most of the guys in sig ep went to a private high school in my hometown. a lot of them are kind of spoiled rich kids, but i've definitely met some nice guys there--my boyfriend has known the pledgemaster since they were cub scouts together haha
several girlfriends of mine spend a lot of time at sig ep. they're not in sororities but for what it's worth they're certainly cute enough to have their pick of guys, and they still choose to spend time there..</p>

<p>Take a look at Delta Upsilon (DU) </p>
<p>They were re-chartered and re-formed five years ago after going inactive because their house was torn down. It was in the historic district and after a fire in another house a few years back that killed a few students, all houses were required to meet new fire codes. It was too old to be updated so they tore it down and rebuilt a new house that opened in 2005 that looks (on the outside) just like the old one which is a historic district requirement. it's also in the middle of Sorority Row.......on Rosemary Street.</p>
<p>They won top fraternity honors in either 2005 or 2006 after only being rechartered for about a year. One advantage of a group like that is that you can help to shape the culture of the group rather than having to try to fit into one that is well ingrained. </p>
<p>My son went to UNC thinking he wouldn't go Greek but liked the fact that he could be a part of building something and pledged DU. They were a good group of guys, have a nice and conveniently located house.</p>
<p>DU was founded at Williams College in the mid 1800s and was the first non-secret society (making them sort of the non-fraternity fraternity) with no secret handshakes, no hazing (by charter) and even open initiation at which your parents will be invited! DU nationally has among its alums all American athletes, several Supreme Court Justices, authors like Kurt Vonnegut and even big name former coaches like Lou Holtz.</p>

<p>haha i think it's a pretty small frat, though, which could actually be nice if you're not as into the typical frat court scene--i remember someone telling my friend and i about a party at delta upsilon and we were like..where the hell is that?</p>

<p>To anyone thinking about joining a UNC fraternity:</p>
<p>Every fraternity/sorority is different on UNC's campus and has different things to offer. So if you truly want to rush, then go to all of them. All of them change each year due to the fact that 1/4 of the house changes. That being said the "Big 4" are Phi Delt, Phi Gam, DKE, Beta - they typically are NC kids have a fair amount of money. They mix with a variety of sororities because basically they know a lot of girls from high school and that helps. Essentially there are varying levels from there and are different. Some are chill and relaxed, some are a lot of athlete type people, some do drugs, some are a balance of hard work and playing hard. </p>
<p>Basically you have to find what best fits for you. Every fraternity has nice guys and dicks. And every girl is going to have a different experience with the guys. The fact is that fraternities are built up by the people. Lots of sororities typically tend to mix with some fraternities and thats just because of who they are and the way their personalities are. However, I have been to a lot of fraternity houses and nearly all of them know good looking girls - some in sororities, some not. </p>
<p>That being said I am a graduate from UNC and was in a fraternity. I had a great experience despite the fact that I was not in a "Big 4" fraternity.</p>
<p>-- To answer the guys question - you typically live in the dorms for a year (joining either fall or spring - your choice) then move in the following fall. Some people wait til junior year to move in. Some don't ever move in (but its cost effective to live-in house so its a good idea if you care about that). Some decide to cancel their dorm contract pay the fee and move in for spring semester and live there all 4 years. It's a matter of choice and what you want to do - though i would recommend living in the dorms for a year to meet people.</p>
<p>Getting caught up in reputation too much will leave you joining for the wrong reasons and will leave you with regret when you don't get that well along with the group. I know people who have quit from all types of fraternities cause they joined the wrong one.</p>

<p>Can anyone tell me about the sororities at UNC? I've heard good things about Kappa Delta and Zeta Tau Alpha. Any personal experiences?</p>
