TAP is a UC specific contract that California CCs have with specific schools, most notably UCLA. It's discussed a lot in these threads because it generally improves one's chance at transfer admissions significantly (a claim that may be refuted by some, but has been true in every situation I've seen). So eh, doesn't really apply to you. No worries.

Hello Pirate,

Regarding your previous statement on how UC intercampus transfers have priority over CCC...I contacted an admissions officer at Cal...and here's the response:

----The Berkeley campus conducts a comprehensive review of all
applicants. You're correct that community college transfer students are
given priority in admissions; quotas are not part of the
process. Preparation for the major at Berkeley is crucial for transfer
applicants. Please see our flyer "Transfer Admission" on the web at at
http://www.uga.berkeley.edu/admissions/general.asp?id=28 or call
510-642-3175 for additional information.

Thank you for your interest in Cal. Sincerely,
Nancy P.-------

CCC students HAVE PRIORITY. That is part of CA's Higher Ed plan. It would not make sense to give priority to intercampus UC transfers--those students are already part of "the program." The idea is to bring in students who can't get to the UC out of high school (for whatever reason).

Yeah, I've never heard anyone contest that inter-UC transfers had priority until now. All of the research I did in preperation to transfer suggested that, if anything, it was much more difficult to transfer from UC to UC than from CCC to UC. Not that someone who is well prepared doesn't have a chance, because they certainly do. But to insist that they have priority is clearly futile.

Out of sheer curiosity, did we ever get Pirate's credentials? Not that I'm questioning his or her authority on the issue...certainly they have plenty of information to share. I was just surprised that everyone took their claim as an expert to heart without so much as questioning how this came to be so (going through the process twice doesn't really make one an expert, per se). Just wondering. I could've missed something. I'm just always skeptical of anyone who claims to be an expert in anything (especially if I'm going to be relying on them for important information*).

*Which I'm not, really. My time here is purely recreational at this juncture. But, y'know. Hypothetically.

I think Pirate was being facetious about the expert part.

Perhaps. Regardless, lots of people seemed to be really interested in his/her input.

I know that help is often solicited around here and that lots of people take the information they receive seriously without any further questioning/research/whatever. But perhaps we should be slightly more discerning (about our sources).

Like I said, my sarcasm detector could be totally broken today. I'm just not big on the spewing of misinformation. Even if there were 50 people around to correct it. Blah.

/Papers are seriously draining my sense of humor.
//At least I recognize it.
///Slashy Slashy.

I think that besides the preference issue, Pirate's been spot on with most of what he's said.

Maybe you can evaluate my chances on the UC's/USC?

applying to UCLA, USC, UCI, UCSD - in order of decreasing preference [yeah I'd go choose UCI over UCSD; I honestly don't think I'd go to any other school other than UCLA at this point].

Also, my essays should represent me very well.

As of 3:00am Tuesday early morning, I have finished revising my essays and will submit Tuesday evening. If anyone needs any additional help, I'll be happy to help.

With TAP, you have more than a good shot of getting into UCLA. The only problem will be getting your first choice major. My girlfriend got in, but not as her first choice. You did list a second major, though, right?

Well, I'm not an expert in the traditional sense. That is, a professional dedicated to a particular field for at least ten years, if that's what you mean. However, my "expertise" (not by choice mind you) is founded on the fact that I have had to endure the admissions process on two seperate occasions. I was accepted to many UC campuses last year, though not the one I wanted and coveted more than you will ever understand (maybe). So I decided to stick it out for one more grueling season in the minors in hopes of one day playing for a team that will get me to the world series. So you are right Allie to question my experience; however, I think Ari clarified my intentions quite accurately. Frankly, I'm surprised my advise and thread carried for as long as it did without inquisition. Anyway, my UC admissions savvy does in fact surpass that of most students on this site. And as far as the UC to UC preference goes, I still think that stands. If two equally qualified applicants, one from a UC the other from a CCC, are trying to transfer to the same campus, the UC student will win-out every time. If you can't show me statistics that suggest otherwise, than your contentions have no basis. On another note, Ari (I will refrain from using your last name), are you the same Ari that I have read about online from the center for technology and democracy. If so, I would just like to say that I admire your work. You are a true scholar. If not, you're still pretty smart.

Nope, that's not me. But it's nice to see that all four Ari's in America are doing something to be a credit to our awesome name. In any case, keep an eye open for my work in the next couple of years. I'm gonna kick that other Ari's butt. :D

PiratesLife, if you want an admissions nightmare, listen to this one:

Senior year high school: Apply to UCs. Don't get ones I want. Off to CC.
1 year of CC: Accepted to all UCs and some privates. Choose UCLA.
Study abroad: Accepted to Univ. of Tsukuba for study abroad. Go.
Graduation: Accepted to JET Program. Go. Hate life. Cold. Want to return to CA.
Currently: Applying to grad school. Can't believe I'm doing this again.

I hate applications.

It seems you and I share the same kind of ambition that is very rare in this world. Compromise is for the weak and less able. We are indeed kings amongst mortal men. Good luck. Applications *@#$%!' suck!

How about this for expertise. I was expelled from high school in the 11th grade. Yo-ho-ho! Arrrr!

"then" I meant "then", not "than"

"How about this for expertise. I was expelled from high school in the 11th grade. Yo-ho-ho! Arrrr!"

Go Figure.

That's right. It's funny that all the work you've put into your life up to this point, still has'nt brought your intellect to the same level as mine. You are a chump Ivy, and I am the tyranny of brilliant minds.

im a sophomore student in some community college in illinois.. i have been looking at pepperdine, UC- santa barbara, UC- santa cruz, UC- riverside and Univ of Miami as a transfer schools after realizing how ridiculously selective UC- Berkeley is specially for out of state applicants. but the thing is, i still dont know how strong my chances are for getting accepted in pepperdine.
here's my stats:
45 credits completed (upon applying)
3.96 gpa
16 credits in progress
njcaa tennis varsity
4 year ncaa volleyball player
attended a catholic high school.. thus giving me no hard time to possibly adapt to pepperdine's "so-called" overly religious appeal..
dean's and president's lister
phi theta kappa honor society member
did lots of community service stuff: enrichment program for the blind, habitat for humanity volunteer, special education volunteer teacher, taught impoverished children somewhere in the philippines
voted vice president and public relations officer of the class all through high school
national debate member
kiwanis club
yamaha music masters circle (piano)
*as for my recommendation letters and essay, i dont think ill run into any trouble with those.
i will be applying soon and am absolutely troubled by the fact that i dont have any idea yet whatsoever about my chances of getting in those schools mentioned.. i hope some helpful soul out there will give me an insight of where i stand as an applicant with regards to my stats... thanks. I REALLY APPRECIATE IT. tell me my chances... which ones are reach, match, etc.
THANKS.. I'LL GIVE COOKIES TO THOSE KIND ENOUGH TO HELP EVALUATE MY CHANCES..
think i'll make UCB or UCSD or UCLA?

I'm guessing your chances are pretty good. Make sure you get at least 60 though. Dedicate the remainder of your units to major preparation work. It won't guarantee admission; however, it will increase your likelihood exponentially.

From my standpoint any of those campuses are within your grasp. Make sure you know where in the Phillipines you did your work though.

thanks pirate! that sure increased my confidence!
