free windows vista or xp from ucla?

Ask around the dorms, assuming you are living there. Tons of people have the corporate that you could easily get a copy of.

Kickserve, you are only talking about legally downloading it if you are an engineering student right? ;]

*cough, "torrents"

lol well i would prefer a legal copy yes... but it is not like i can't live without windows since it kinda sucks... what is this corporate thing you guys are talking about? is it like unlimited license to some organization and schools? like I think my roommate gets his office for mac from UCI because his dad is a professor there... maybe i can bum off a copy of office too :)

From what I understand corporate edition is just that. It's troublesome typing in serial numbers for hundreds of computers so companies can get a version that doesn't need them but probably under the stipulation it is only to be used at that company.

If you only plan to use the basic features Office though why not look into getting Open Office? It isn't as robust as MS' offering but if all you plan to do with it is stuff like write papers or make basic slideshows it gets the job done.

Open Office is pretty robust. Good choice

Google Docs.

Use alternatives. Say ARGGHHH and learn how to be a pirate. Or fork over the money.
