Freshman at UCD. Ask me anything :)

How hard/easy is it to minor in an engineering college?

Freshman are not allowed to have car permits, and since you need to have a permit to keep a car overnight, freshman don’t bring up cars. I guess you can park it at Rite Aid or some shopping complex temporarily, but if you want to keep your car safe in a parking garage or parking lot, you’ll have to wait until you’re a sophomore.
OR you can park downtown or in Woodland and bike to Davis. That’s definitely doable if you want to keep your car purely for long distance commutes.

As for gender ratios, I haven’t seen much of a discrepancy. As a political science and econ major, there are more males than females in my classes, but it’s not a really significant amount.

I’m not too sure about the engineering program here at Davis. I know it’s remarkable and A LOT OF WORK. But that goes for any school when it comes to engineering.

I thought you were a Cal student, pinkpixie? Please don’t make threads like that if you’re intending to ■■■■■ the community. Thanks.

Do I need to know how to bike? ( I can’t bike at all. D= )

@ Natural: Not at all. There are a lot of students who take the buses (free for UCD students. Not meant to transport you between classes, btw, and I never see anyone from Segundo or Tercero taking the buses) or just walk.

@soprano ok thanks!

Do you know anything about the Computer Science major? I’ve been accepted as a Linguistics major, and I’m considering double majoring in Computer Science (or minoring).

What about a longboard?

Can you get around easily with one or would it just be a hassle?

@PhantomVirgo: What about it do you want to know? Also, do you have any programming experience?

I don’t, which brings me to one of the main things I’m wondering about: What classes would you recommend to “test the waters”, so to speak? Also, how math-intensive is it? I’m decent at math and do like doing it, but I’m a year removed from Calc AB, which is what I’m worrying about with regards to the math requirements.

Thank you to anyone who can answer.

The math most often used in computer science isn’t what you find in your high school sequence. It’s covered in ECS 20 discrete math. It’s a lot of logic and dealing with whole numbers. I think it’s something good to known in general, but I’m biased.

(At the undergraduate level, you see a little calculus come up from time to time to prove things or find a min/max but otherwise not too often. There are higher level classes which will have more of it, but it depends on the specialty. The intro programming course isn’t going to need calculus.)

It’s okay if you’ve never taken programming before. There are plenty of people who start in college and do fabulously. However, it’s also something that takes time and if you procrastinate, it only magnifies the little mistakes and makes things take even longer. The intro programming course is ECS 30. If you have time over the summer, it might be good to try some online beginners course to familiarize yourself with some concepts because that will help with the learning curve.

Given that you like the process of doing math (even if you’re a little rusty) and you’re interested in linguistics, I say it’s more than worth a try.

Alright, thanks for the thorough answer.

For a more general question, how do you guys think the food on-campus is, and what meal plan would you recommend?

I think the food is great. Segundo and Tercero’s DCs both serve the same food as each other, but Cuarto’s menu is drastically different from Segundo and Tercero’s since Cuarto’s DC focuses more on sustainability, so you won’t see jello or soft-serve yogurt in their DC like you would in Segundo or Tercero’s DCs (you do get to scoop real ice cream at Cuarto, though).

If you live close by and can go home on weekends, I’d recommend getting the 90 or 120. If you don’t eat breakfast, I’d recommend the 150. If you want to eat 3 meals a day, get the 180, and if you want to eat an unlimited amount of time, get the unlimited. I don’t know a lot of people who do get the unlimited, though. I currently have the 150, but since I’m getting bored with DC food (even though it varies) and buying groceries from Trader Joes or Savemart more, I’m downgrading to the 120 for next quarter.

I happened to read this in one of your posts.
can u describe to me what kind of extracurricular activities u did specifically because i am about to get started

“I had baller extra currics, though. I used my essays to my advantage. And the extra currics pretty much got me into college.”

how is the biochemistry major at UCD? is it too hard to get accepted into? also if i apply as under biosystems engineering, or biotechnology, i can always switch to biochemistry right?
