How is it?
Are there any Davis Poli Sci majors who can share their experiences with the classes, professors, research opportunities, etc?

Yay poli-sci!

I am a political science- public service major so I should be able to help you with most of your poli-sci questions.

And political science is great. I have not had a bad political science experience yet.

I'm a poli sci major right now, and i've been pretty happy with classes so far. I'm also doubling in econ if you have any questions about that aspect as well. Research opportunities don't really present themselves until you get into the smaller upper-division courses where you get more one-on-one time with professors. The older undergrad students i know have had many opportunities to participate in research projects w/ poli sci professors.

bump if any UCD Poli Sci majors want to volunteer themselves up for some questions by an inquisitive prospective freshman. haha.

bumpitttttttttyyyyyyyyyy

ill take any questions you got

How's the International Relations program / classes / teachers? Do you recommend any teachers in the PolySci dept? doot.

I wanted to ask that question too. I forget, is IR considered to be a sub catigory of Poli Sci aT UCD or a complete different major? (Some other schools consider it different). I'm thinking of focusing in that area. I am admitted for fall in Poli Sci as a transfer and I have a lot of the same questions here too.

As far as professors go, I've only had three, but here's what I can tell you. Scott and Taylor are top-notch, take their classes if you can. Avoid Maoz if you can. I've also taken a class that was taught by a grad student, Tannehill-Lodigiani, she was okay but not amazing.

Poli Sci and IR are separate majors. However, you will most likely need to take some IR classes for your poli sci major (and vice versa).

Political Science

Thank you for your advice on Poli Sci instructors. Collegemom, thanks for the links to the three areas of politcal concentration. I'm excited already. Damn July needs to turn to August and August needs to turn into September.

Does anyone here major in Community and Regional Development? If I get in, that's what I plan to major in.

Also, how hard is it to double major?

I'm thinking about that area too. Public Policy is great, but the problem with elected positions is you spend much of the time raising funds and spending them. Public Planning is an intresting sub field.

It's generally not hard to double major. In fact, most of the majors in the College of Letters and Sciences are so small that one of the graduation requirements is doing a minor or double major.

I'm taking Sociology of Law, Political Sociology and Comparative Politics this Fall. I plan on double majoring - Polysci/Sociology or major/minor.

My Profs:

Mary Jackman
Tim Grattet
Ethan Scheiner

However, I may drop Comp. Pols. and take Intro. International Relations. during PASS2.

My absolute favorite polsci prof is Dr. John Gates, he teaches POL150, 151 and 153 i think. His specialty is in the court system, so if you're into that, like me, you'll love him.

IR is a separate major at davis, not a subconcentration like at SB

Nice, thanks for the recomendation barfdog. What year are you again???

sophomore now
