freshman class scheduling

And I remember hearing that one of the math and one of the CS classes were weeders.

[/quote]

None of the math classes are weeders. There was just an unfortunate situation with Prof. Biskup (there were As and Bs in the class though).

CS 31/32/33 are weeder classes (moreso for 32/33). They will prove to you whether or not to stick with CS or CSE if those are your prospective majors.

Because I'm a dork. I had to deal with a lot of things kids shouldn't have had to deal with, so my entire life I've been looking forward to when I'm done with school, have a job, have my dogs, and can support myself. But watch me get to UCLA and never leave, especially if I go abroad.

^ ok i can understand wanting to get to a place where you're independent.
but yes, once you get to UCLA... you won't want to leave ;)

It's painful to complete everything in 3 years. For me, I'm completing my Psychobio requirements in 3 years, but at the cost of taking summer classes. The upside is that I only have to take 3 classes every quarter.

I'm still taking 4 years though, because I want to minor in something like Spanish or Business

Business Management Minor?

Well, whatever that minor was on the sign above Bruinwalk.

xD

What's the difference between Business Economics and the Business Management Minor? I heard that the minor will be designated for the Economics majors who were weeded out/rejected/didn't make the cut for Business Economics.

Also, when do we declare the option for EE majors? (CE, EE BME)

I don't think you officially declare your option until 3rd year when they have a DPR check.

Same for any major. That's why you hear so many people declaring themselves as 'premeds', but then eventually drop out.

right now I'm thinking about doing chem 20a, math 31b, and CS31. Should I switch out CS31 for an easy GE or something or keep this the way it is?

Well, what you can do is to just sign-up for 4 classes. Test them out the first week or so. Figure out the syllabus and how much work you'll need to do on a regular basis to do well on your exams. See if the midterms will be unfortunately strenuous for you. No one can gauge your ability to handle your work and study loads except for you. Drop a class by the 4th week without penalty if you feel it is too much.

Enjoy your years here! There is no rush to graduate unless money is an issue...

Yeah that doesn't sound like the most ideal schedule. (What do I know though? I haven't taken CS31!) I think you should take it "easy" or take the normal route your first quarter here so you can adjust and have some fun. Your Orientation Counselor will probably advise you to take two of those major requirements with an easy GE. Where are BoelterHall and flopsy?

ok another dumb question: should i have a break in between classes so i can have an hour to eat lunch at 12:00, or should i have classes until 1:00 and eat lunch then?

This is entirely up to you. wowx, at this point, you do not know if you'll be able to get your schedule. Assuming that you do have a schedule with those conditions, I think the 1:00 would be more ideal. Lunch closes at 2pm generally for the dining commons. You can eat the specialty restaurants (again, using your meal swipes) from past 2pm I think... http://www.dining.ucla for hours of operation for clarity's sake... Having a break between 12 and 1pm might be more conducive to not wasting time or spending more time than needed for having lunch though... W/E up to you!

haha, thanks.

My recommendation is to take as least breaks as possible. You will see why later.

Hello Emmeline! I think I answered wowx's question in another thread. But this courseload:

CS31
Chem20A
Math 31B/32A

is the standard first quarter engineering load. It is not hard difficult at all, unless you had no prior programming experinence (for CS31, 75% chance automatic grade < B-). You can add a GE if you'd like or English Composition (if you didn't pass out of that.

Chemistry 20A should be review of high school chemistry supplemented with derivations and expansion of terms you never learned in high school. It includes an introduction to quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, organic molecules and polymers, transition metal complexes, spectroscopy, and intermolecular forces.

In college, you learn to derive equations and understand its purpose and applications. In high school, you just learned to use equations that was never derived (so you don't know exactly how it works),

As for math, multivariable calculus (32A) shouldn't be too bad of a transition. Assuming you got a 5 on BC to reach this stage, you'll be in fine shape, as long as you keep up with your studies.

thanks.

Just to make sure, we'll be able to see our AP scores before orientation 101 right?

Possibly. Last year we were able to. For this reason, students chose 102 to make sure they had an earlier enrollment time than most students and also to have AP scores in hand to work with their schedules. Consider looking at the AP-to-units conversion chart somewhere on the UCLA website (google it) and then see if it really matters with AP exams and scheduling classes.

I need a 5 on the BC to pass out of 31B. And what is up with all these "unassigned" credits I'm getting for my AP tests, they seem so darn worthless.

They help with class standing.

Yes .. this question has been asked many times. YES! YES!
