Freshman classes

Oh and thanks GGT for the pickaprof stuff. It appears as if she may be an easier teacher based on the freshman english stuff. If they are averaging almost a B in that class, which I hear is very tough, than a lit class with her shouldn't be too bad.

GGT,

Your Pops picked up the correct cable.

Thanks guys! P.S. BigJ - being the anal retentive that I am - I taped your "instructions" to the bottom of the cable package so I'll have them handy when I try to set up the connection....

Now if I can only survive the orientation and get a decent schedule - I'm good to go!

okay, waitlist question. I want to go on the waitlist for a class. Being on the waitlist puts me at 19 credits, so its putting a block and not letting me go on the wl. but if I got in the class, I'd obviously drop one of my other ones. Do I have to talk to an advisor to override the block?

Eckie,

Yes. Talk to your advisor about it.

Okay - so once I get back from orientation - if they open up new sections of the science classes, I can switch from home?

On Monday, they opened up more seats in my Chem class for the prof I want - but almost all of them were filled because people jumped in from the waitlist. There is literally one seat in the section that makes my schedule sing - if that seat is gone by Thursday and the orientation folks can't get me around that - I'll need to come home and watch and wait to move as they open more seats - it will be awesome if I can do that from home!

Where online do I go to do that? Do I need anything but my SID and password?

yeah u just go to testudo.umd.edu and go to records and registration. they'll show u how to go from it at UMD and u can do the same exact thing at home.

Great! Thanks!

Glad pickaprof is helping everyone. It´s the best $5 I spend each semester.

--TESTUDO: Don´t remember where you said you´d be living but for what you said....

Mon - HIST157, KEY, 1100-1150 ; CCJS100, TYD, 400-450
--Key is towards the middle of the mall, it´s about a 15-min walk from North Campus (maybe a little more at the beginning of the semester). Tydings is on top of the mall so it´s a little closer but not much. If you´re in a dorm near the mall these will take you 5 minutes to get to.

Tue - ENGL211, HBK, 1100-1215 ; MATH220, PHY, 1230-145
--Hornbake is right across the street from Physics; this will be fine.

Wed - HIST157, KEY, 900-950 (Dis) ; HIST157, KEY, 1100-1150 ; MATH220, MTH, 200-250 (Dis) ; UNIV101, BPS, 300-450
--The hour break when you don´t even have to leave that building kind of sucks...if you don´t live nearby you should prob just plan on bringing something to read/do and camping out on a bench on the mall for an hour. If you´re living on north campus the math building is a hike (not really from cambridge comm though) so make sure you leave plenty of time...I started out taking around 25 min to get there from denton. Then Bio/Psych is pretty close to that, but the building itself is a little confusing to get around the first couple times.

Thurs - ENGL211, HBK, 1100-1215 ; MATH220, PHY, 1230-145 ; CCJS100, KEY, 300-350

And just FYI, the room you´ll be in for 220 discussion is the physics lecture hall, which is right inside the main doors across from the plant sciences building...if you try to go in the entrance by the math building you´ll confuse yourself :)

hope that all helped...i´m in spain studying abroad for 6 weeks so i haven´t been on much. trying to catch up with everyone :)

Thanks a lot Lindz! I've heard about the Bio/Psych building and the experiment they did with it. For those that haven't heard, the room numbers are all jumbled up in no order whatsoever, and the reason was they wanted to see how many people would ask directions and how many people would just try and find the room. Pretty funny I'd imagine!

What's the abbreviation for the Bio/Psych building?

BPS is the abbreviation for bio/psych.

i don´t know if the numbers are COMPLETELY random, but they definitely aren´t logical! i had a class in there spring 05 which i was able to find pretty easily. but there are a lot of dead-end hallways (like a rat maze) and things aren´t symmetrical to each other (bathrooms, water fountains). enjoy exploring :P

mmk - question - I signed up for a 300 level class (politics of world hunger) for one of my cores. All the prof-review sites I've been to don't make it look particularly hard - but am I going to want to poke my eye out with a pen for taking a 300 1st semester?

question about taking honors level courses- do most/all honors students take their courses in the honors level if it is offered even if they arent proficient in the subject? For example, i havent taken bio since honors bio in 9th grade. im possibly looking to major in it but im obviously probably weak in it- should i sign up for bio 105H? (same goes for calc 141H, i took ab calc and got a 5 but still need to take 141)

any feedback about the 300 course as a freshman?

(I'm nagging because I'm bored at work)

you should be ok taking a 300 course, especially if there arent any prereq's. it will be harder though since the prof will assume you know what you're doing and everyone else in the class will probably be at least a sophomore. its not impossible.

Another time/distance question here for anyone that can help: is the walk from the Plant Sciences Building to the Architecture Building manageable in 15 minutes? If I were to take SPAN303, I would have to make this walk once a week.

kurplunk--
no, you don't have to at all...a lot of people don't bother. i've never actually taken an honors-level class. i signed up for a HIST h-version, but switched into the regular level when the professor told us that the only difference was that the honors section had an extra 20-page paper to write!! no thanks! but if the class is in your major, it might be good to get the extra practice, and plenty of h-versions actually ARE more challenging and better for majors. just depends on the class.
