Freshman Dorms

Could you guys suggest the best dorms for a freshman in engineering. I would like to know which dorms have a decent social life with great interiors (preferably recently renovated) and clean community baths.

You cannot pick a dorm anyway. For freshmen, you will have more claases in the main campus than in North Campus.

Unless you are applying to a learning community, you will just have to hope to get lucky with the housing assignment. Any dorm can be social, but it really depends on the people in the hall you get placed in. Just try to avoid north campus as a freshman if possible.

Why should freshmen avoid north campus?

The dorms are old and the food is not as good. The central campus dorms have all been refurbished. The positive things about NC are the proximity to the engineering, music and architecture schools and that it is a bit quieter. In any case it is a 10 min bus ride between campuses. The NCRB has the nicest pool too.

If the dislike of North campus were about old crummy dorms you wouldnt have tons of kids who’d trade just about any dorm for Markley but you do.

The truth is that it’s the need to ride the busses to get to central campus that is considered a HUGE downside. While the ride may only be 10 minutes you have to wait for a bus to come. Moreover the busses stop running before many kids want to have to leave parties on central ( even though it’s very late to most adults, it’s “too early” for a lot of college kids.) And they don’t run early ennough on weekend mornings to make it to the beginning of tailgating. Even if you’re not someone who cares about these social issues you may be very jealous of the kids on central who can run to a drugstore at night while you would have a bus trip up and back to deal with just to get a bandaid or a new pen or some cough drops

For a music major, wouldn’t it be better to live on north campus? I believe all her classes will be on north campus except for maybe 1 or 2 per semester.
