@hellodocks - one more question! Do they arrange streams by floor? Or is it just random?

@Ohboi that is exactly what I said to myself about yesterday after reading more dorm reviews.

About Rubin: It’s not that great. The dining hall is sub-par, the rooms are not that great/clean/spacious, and there are good people you’ll bond with in every dorm, so that’s not exclusive to that building.

About kitchens: It’s a luxury for any freshman building. NYU would not voluntarily give students a kitchen at the lower freshman housing price, if it weren’t for the fact that they need the sheer size of 3N to host as many freshmen as it can, it would be an upperclassman building.

About Brittany: You’ll be fine once you make it through September. There’s no A/C which ends up being brutal in the triples there (the predominant layout), but the minute cooler weather arrives, it’s peachy. The closet space is the definite selling point, and I believe it shows: last year Brittany had the highest female population percentage of any buildings save the ResCollege (Goddard and Broome St.).

@hayley
Best of luck on your application. One more week?! You are NOT arranged by stream. Floor selection is random, as far as anyone can tell. There will be people from your stream on your floor, but it’s by chance rather than design.

If you manage to make it here before the holidays send me a PM. I’m leaving for Florence for the spring semester, but if it’s as simple a matter as showing you the ResColl buildings, I wouldn’t mind. It’s absurd that they’re as bad about doing in-building tours here as they are. The whole damn school is bureaucratic.

Good thread on Dorms, now that people got accepted. Just wanted to bump it to the top.

Are there single rooms (or 3 people suites with 1 room for each person) in either 3N or Hayden?

Does 3rd North offer a double; one bedroom with 2 people sharing?

There are some rooms in Hayden that end up being singles disguised under a suite type design, but I’m not sure/don’t think you can request them and I don’t know how many of them there are.

So what’s the general opinion on best party dorm? 3N?

windy,

Up until this year, I kept hearing that Hayden is the party dorm (and reason it tended to be the first choice for many ED admits, to the point that RD admits would have a small chance of getting into Hayden).

Then I kind of had a dialogue with Hellodocks who as a student claims 3N is the party dorm, very loud and not easy for someone wanting peace and quiet. However, my son has some of his best friends living there. He has been at 3N and he does not think it is crazy social. Nice social was his experience. Of course, it can depend on the floor, your roommates/ suitemates and the time you are visiting.

@urbanman
I have not heard of there being singles in any of the freshmen residence halls, except for RA’s or medical needs. I think what jake6970 is trying to explain is that some rooms in Hayden have this random extra empty small room which a resident could turn into a small bedroom if they wanted. I’ve seen this twice before. Keep in mind not every suite has this.

@windy214 @evolving
I agree that 3N is the party dorm, but I don’t think it’s crazy. It depends on the people you wind up living around though. I don’t
I feel like Hayden has lost its spark as the most social/party dorm. I mean, I don’t live there but I’m there enough and it doesn’t seem all the special. It’s alright to live in though.

Which dorm buildings offer a one bedroom for 2 people?

can someone provide a detailed perspective of the founders dorms? please :)

absolute,

It looks like all the freshmen dorms have this option. Double check yourself at the link I am providing. What you are referring to are the “1-3 room suites ranging from 2-6 people in a suite” in the descriptions under the various dorms. All of the dorms have these as options, in the $11,000 range for 2010-2011.

http://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/resLifeHousServ/documents/NYU029_housing-rates0b.pdf

leader, what kind of detailed perspective are you asking for in regards to founders. Please clarify.

absolute,

Please note that the type of room you are talking about seems to be cheaper in Rubin and Brittany, around $9000 for 2010-2011 (instead of $11,000+). These two dorms have no air-conditioning.

Hi! Just wanted to get some more information on the different towers of 3N…I keep hearing how the towers are really different from each other but no specifics. Also, info on the closet space in 3N would be great, thanks!

@windy/evolving
Hayden is a favorite for ED applicants for a number of reasons. ED applicants almost always have chosen that school as their favorite already, and therefore tend to know the most about the school compared to other applicants. Hayden is one of the nicer freshman dorms, it has a tremendous dining hall in it, it’s the second-closest to campus (only Goddard beats it, and that is special-interest housing so many don’t want it), the rooms are fairly sized, it has gorgeous park views, and probably one of the best locations for celeb-sightings.

I wouldn’t say it’s the largest party dorm and that’s why ED kids choose it. I’d say the above reasons are why it’s popular, that and the fact that once kids hear others talking about it so enthusiastically there’s a ripple effect and everyone wants to be in on the ‘cool’ thing to do.

3N, however, is undoubtedly the most consistently party-atmosphere dorm. I never said it’s crazy social. It is crazy at times, no doubt. But no other building has as many people, as lax RAs, as few faculty in residence, as lax public security staff, and best party rooms. Put that together and there’s literally always something going on, always.

@absolute
Almost all of them. Goddard has doubles, Hayden has doubles, Rubin has doubles, Founders has doubles within a suite (2 doubles with a vestibule and a bathroom), Weinstein is almost all doubles, and Brittany has a few.

@leader
Founders is almost cookie-cutter in design. The rooms are all quads, two identical doubles with a fairly sizeable vestibule and full bathroom. The floors are tiled, the windows are large … and for 2015 it’d only be the fourth year the building is open. It’s definitely the newest and generally cleanest, but as with everything, there would be exceptions to that. It’s also got the rep as the most Asian dorm; you will never walk in/out of it without seeing a crowd of Asian kids smoking or reading right outside the dorms (both if it’s finals week ). I don’t know why that matters to some people, but it’s a definite fact no one seems to be able to explain, just observe.

@Shorty
Two towers are newer, got renovated two years ago. One isn’t, and that’s the one that sucks. Closet space isn’t that great, I visited a friend ALL the time there and she always had trouble squeezing clothes in/out of her closet she shared. It’s definitely better than Brittany (one shared for a triple, ugh), but unless you use underbed storage you will without a doubt find it challenging to keep your stuff, especially if you’re a girl.

Is it possible to get a single in a shared suite in 3N, or are those only available to RAs?

They’re not only available to RAs, last I knew. It’s exceptionally rare to get one, but the friend I was always visiting had a girl in her suite who had one. Their room was two doubles and one single with two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a common room.

I think that tower was laid out like that, but the other two towers, the only singles-in-a-suite had the RA on each floor.

i’ve only heard of someone with a single in a 5-person suite (2 doubles + 1 single).

Thanks so much hellodocks! Definitely helpful information in making my decision on dorms :)
