Freshman Fall 2012 - arrive on campus date

I am planning a summer trip for my D and friends and one of the girls will be attending GT as a freshman. Trying to determine what day she will need to be on campus for Fall 2012. The GT website is unclear on this, but seems to possibly be around August 11th - this seems so early.

Classes are scheduled to start on August 20th. If it’s anything like my freshman year, I’d guess that move in will be around the 16th or 17th.

Classes start on the 20th, so she doesn’t need to be on campus until the 19th. As mentioned, Freshman move-in (the first day allowed on campus) will probably be August 16th.

Two other things to keep in mind: first, she’ll need to be on campus for orientation (FASET) at some point during the summer. She picks that date from six options, so make sure she doesn’t pick the weekend of your trip. Second, if she wants to rush a sorority she will probably need to be on campus the first day of move-in (probably the 16th).

About FASET, are classes filled first come, first served? We live > 600 (but < 1000) miles from Atlanta but my daughter is concerned that she will have less selection of classes/times of classes if she waits until the session for kids who live far away. I am not eager to make 2 trips to Atlanta this summer if I can avoid it.

Thanks Banjo - working around this kid’s schedule is going to be tougher - the trip is one month long but can be any 30 days during the summer. Thanks for letting me know about this summer orientation - she’s the only one with that.

FASET isn’t required, but it’s strongly suggested (if for no other reason than to register). So if she can’t make it during the summer it won’t be the end of the world.

I can’t tell you how they’re going to do it this year, but in the past they’ve reserved a fraction in each class for each of the FASET sections. So for FASET I, they open 1/6 of the seats in the freshman classes for registration, for FASET II they open another 1/6, etc. If they do that again this year (and I would be very surprised if they didn’t), there’s no advantage or disadvantage to going to the first or last FASET.

Is she planning to go through sorority rush? I don’t know the dates, but it’s usually a few days before fall classes start.

Thanks for the info, you guys! She does plan to do sorority rush so I know she will be there a little early just for that.
