Freshman Housing

hey there everyone, i got in early 1, and i have a pretty important question. Im debating wether to dorm at Thurston or At mitchell and i cant make my mind up. If there is anyone who knows more about the 2 for example which one is crazzier, which one is nicer in regards to the dorms themselves, and which "type" of kids. overall i got in early one which is awsome and have priority regisration for housing. i really wanna make sure i pick the right one. Also, when can you select your housing.

thanks alot guys and to all of you who are applying now, GOOD LUCK

i've heard rumor of a new freshman dorm (I also got in ED I and haven't received my housing package yet...should i be worried??)

anyways, check out GW's housing section of their website - you can take virtual tours of every dorm and look at housing plans.

A word about housing: When GW receives your deposit you will be eligible to register for housing (whenever GW opens the housing registration for ED students) ED I students will receive their housing numbers first, ED II students second, and then RD students are assigned housing numbers in the order their deposits are received. So ED students do in fact get the best housing numbers. Once you have your housing number you can choose where you want to live (among the dorms designated for freshmen). Housing registration stays open until right after the last Colonial Inauguration (CI orientation--in June and early July). Once the housing registration closes, GW will assign housing and room mates. You can change your preference of dorms and request room mates right up until registration closes. So if during CI you visit dorms and see one you would prefer you can go online to housing registration and change your original request. If you decide to be part of a Living and Learning Community (LLC), you can request that--and you will be assigned housing according to the dorm where the LLC will be. If you meet someone at CI and want to request them as a room mate, you can do that also. GW leaves the housing open until after the last CI for all these reasons. Once they begin to assign housing, they will consider requests according to your housing number...so ED I & II students have the lowest numbers and best shot at getting their first choice of dorms and CLL assignments. My daughter was accepted RD and we sent the acceptance deposit back within 24 hours and she got her first choice of a dorm and LLC. And honestly regardless of housing numbers, most people she has met got the dorms and LLC's that they requested.
GW will send you all of this information. And you can see descriptions of all the dorms on their website. There is a new dorm on F Street for freshmen set to open in Sept. 06 which can house about 150 students. Thurston, Mitchell, Fullbright and Lafayette are also freshman dorms. HOVA will no longer be used as a freshmen dorm after spring 06. There are also freshmen dorms on the Mt. Vernon campus. Once you receive the housing information, read it thoroughly, check out the dorm descriptions on the website and follow their registration instructions carefully. Attend CI and take the dorm tours and attend the LLC workshop! Before you know it you will be on campus, moved in, making new friends and attending classes in the fall. Congratulations to all accepted students.

How about housing for people in special programs?

As I recall, Lafayette houses the Honors students and 7 year med students and some engineering/biomeds as well. The women's leadership programs are housed on Mt Vernon campus and some honors students there as well. D was not chosen for honors, but for science scholar instead and did not apply to any other special programs. My understanding is that if you are in these programs you can choose the special housing, but it is not mandatory.

I just posted a rather long post describing each freshman dorm under the topic "Acceptees: Where are you living" (or something like that). You should check it out, I just might have answered a question.

And about housing programs: besides Honors and the Women's program, the programs tend to move around depending on the number of people etc. All that information will be posted on the CLLC website before you're even allowed to register for housing.

is anyone thinking about a living-and-learning community?

My son is thinking about a LLC. Do you know what the registration process is? when can you go online to do this.

Daughter joined an LLC as a freshman this year and is enjoying it and found it a good way to meet people and make friends. She gave her preference for LLC's when she registered for housing online. D was RD acceptee, but as I recall, housing registration opened online for ED1 & 2 students sometime in mid-March and I'm sure you will receive mail regarding this prior to the registration process. (GW is busy with returning student housing selection now through March 1 and probably likes to get that finished before turning full attention to new freshmen!). Housing and LLC preferences can be changed online through July (until the last Colonial Inauguration orientation session) while retaining your ED priority housing registration number. Available LLC's were highly featured during the orientation sessions and there were several themes to choice from if one was interested. That being said, I have read that the formats of LLC's are changing next year, however I don't know if that will apply to freshman LLC's as well. So be on the look-out for information in the mail pertaining to LLC's and housing for incoming freshmen. Rest assured that you'll see and hear a lot about LLCs and can visit dorms during orientation and change your mind about housing and LLC's and even request a roommate all the way through the summer orientations.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I'll pass it on to him!

Live in Thurston. It will be the best decision you ever made. Its a non-stop party, you meet all your friends, and its just a blast in general. Freshman who live elsewhere usually feel left out. But dont worry, you can still get your work done and make it out with decent grades.

I want to apply to the 6 year BA/JD program, and you have to have a 3.7, would it be good for me to stay in some place different (ie New Hall). I am however a very social person. Any Ideas?

My brother was an '05 graduate from GW. He definatly suggests Thurston. It's pretty much the dorm to be in if you want to have a good time. Mitchell is mostly (if not all, if i remember correctly) singles and that is not the right place to be if you want to be social. I heard from a friend that Thurston was named a couple years ago as being one of the most premicuous college dorms in the country. That's always a good sign.

not really, LR22.

I'm currently a freshman at GW and I live in Fulbright. I love Fulbright but know others who love where they live as well. Thurston is definately the loudest dorm but it is also large. In Fulbright one gets to know all your floor really well and it's small, (it also has a kitchen in every room). Choose what you want. Many of the other dorms are similar to Fulbright in terms of feel. I don't really know about Mitchell, apparently it is nice and I know that it is also a sophomore dorm (might be living there next year), Somers is an al girls dorm and is nice. There is also the new dorm which looks like it should be a nice dorm. Hope this helps.
