The application goes live on the 16th and you have until July to make any changes to it (adjusting preferences, etc.) They will start sending out notifications mid to late July. Call Housing at 202-994-2552 for exact dates and more info.

Thurston shouldn't be hard to get into. It houses about 1,000 students. As always, no guarantees.

With about 900 ED students, most of which will be spread over Potomac and Thurston, it will make it more tricky for those who deposit later than you. So DEPOSIT early and file early.... Good luck!

Also make sure you have a netid and your GWid, because in order to file for housing you need that!

uh-oh.

so say i still haven't decided and i'm probably going to decide where i go the night before i have to (because i cahnge my mind every other day)... whats my fate in terms of dorms at gw? am i guna be stuck someplace horrible>?

thanks everyone!!

haha, thats the nice thing about GW dorms are not horrible at all, you may just end up on the vern, which is bad but you have to commute to the main campus every day. I recommend you visit both campuses, I find the vern to be a nice campus that they pretty much remodeled when they took it over and to have a real collegiate feel, but GW is mostly known for the city. Just keep your mind open and good luck! if you need help choosing, I am always happy to help!

thanks so much for your help grapkoski!

im deciding between gw, lehigh, bucknell and santa clara(santa clara because they gave me a ton of money)

i think id like gw, but im not sure if its guna be worth the extra 10k a year, and i certainly dont want to pay that and end up living off campus.

let me know what you think about those schools in comparison to gw.. if you dont mind haha i could use all the help i can get! thanks again!

I'm ever so bias towards GW, but what's important in a school for you? Give me some points and I can address the strengths or weaknesses of GW in those areas.

Well the one thing GW has that none of those do is the city, which was a huge factor in my desire to attend GW. An ex-girlfriend of mine is at Bucknell and doesn't like it because the cool place to hang out is well, walmart...

Like what GW current student says, some more points and i will try to be as impartial as possible.

they are all good schools, but so different

From this post on GW's message board, it says

All ED1 candidates will be considered together, ED2 candidates will be considered together, and the same for Regular Decision students.

I stand corrected...

I went to something about housing yesterday at GW (it was one of the ED April visit days). The way I understand it, you basically sign up for housing starting sometime this month, but you can make as many changes to your application between then and mid-July. They don't even look at them until this summer, and ED gets first pick. This also gives you time to request a roommate if you meet somebody during CI.

I'm not really clear on the new system they talked about, but it has something to do with interest specific "houses" within each dorm. For example, there's the culture and arts house at potomac, the politics and public policy house at thurston, or the humanities and sports studies house at fulbright (I have the handout!). The GW rep said that the house that you choose doesn't need to have to do with your major.

I'm also assuming it's not mandatory to sign up for one of these, but I really have no idea. I thought that these already existed (LLC's?), but he talked about it like it was brand new for the class of 2010.

He also talked about getting rid of RA's (I forget GW's term for them) and replacing them with "house proctors" or something like that. I'm not sure if this is really just a superficial name change, but I think it also affects how students are disciplined, increasing UPD's involvement in more serious offenses but leaving smaller things up to student groups within the dorms themselves (I think he said there is going to be some sort of rotating dorm council who deals with smaller issues like trash in the hallways or a loud room).

I think I'm going to go for Thurston and have that quintessential freshman experience, but I hear Potomac House has super nice rooms (two doubles share a bathroom) so I figure I'll wait until after CI to decide for sure. Don't quote me on any of this because I really just sat in on one half hour info session, but I hope this will be helpful to anyone who couldn't make it to one of the April visit days.
