Freshman Housing

idklol, there is no problem getting football tickets for Parent’s weekend (or any game, for that matter). If you buy them then, you’ll be in a section with other parents.

S and roommate have connected. Thank goodness S’s roommate called, because S was content to meet him on move-in day.

Another box shipped to Vanderbilt yesterday. We leave on Thursday. We will pack the suitcases and duffle bags on Thursday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it all fits. We will see.

S is busy seeing friends before he goes. He’s the first to leave. A lot of his friends are going to schools on the quarter system so they don’t leave until the middle of September.

Go9erssjrh…it’s getting so close!

My son is also content to meet his roommate at school and I guess his roommate is too because my son hasn’t heard from him. My son obviously didn’t my planning gene. Anyway, I figure if they end up with double of anything I will just bring it back home…

I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well for you guys. Safe travels :-)

^^it must be a boy thing. My son did attempt to find his roommate on social media, but a phone call is out of the question. I was going to buy a refrigerator, etc, but I guess they’ll just have to figure it out because I’m not flying home with a fridge!

^^
It sounds like my son is normal then. I was realy happy when the roommate called because I knew son wouldn’t. I was just hoping for an email.

Roommate is local so they may get together on the day son moves in. I’m encouraging that since it will be a lot quieter on Tuesday. Also roommate may have some input on what we do in the room. But then again, I figure it’s a standard rectangular room with closets on either side so one takes one side and the other takes the other side. Pretty straightforward.

It is getting close.

With four dressers, two desks, and beds loftable at a number of height settings, there’s actually quite a bit of rearranging freedom. Takes some time to figure out a good setup. Definitely do that before unpacking!

I’m reading through the information that housing sent. It says that only appoved white putty called “Hold it” are approved. We’ve bought 3M adhesive strips. Is that a problem? Do students use them and take their chances?

I’m also curious about the white putty. During our visit, the tour guide told us that the walls were covered with something that allowed push pins to be used without damaging the wall/leaving a mark when removed. Has anyone else heard of this?

Every room is different. Some have a porous wall or two that allow pushpins. Most walls are a much harder concrete-like material that is just painted over. You won’t be able to get a pushpin in (plus it would leave a permanent mark). If you use those adhesive strips, they will almost certainly pull paint off the walls at the end of the year and you will get a small fee for repainting (like $25 or $50 ish). Even light adhesives pulled paint of my walls but maybe you’ll get lucky. The putty can be annoying as it isn’t the greatest adhesive, but it will prevent wall damage.

Actually, I remember them having a station in the bookstore last year that sold ‘Command strips’ as an approved adhesive. That said, things could have changed, but generally Command strips are advertised as a damage free solution that hold much, much better than putty. I used them on my door last year and had no issues with their removal, though your mileage may vary.

We’ve decided to go with the command strips and take our chances.

Most of the command strips came off cleanly but one pulled the paint off the wall board; however the RA didn’t see it due to the way the bed was arranged at the time of move out so my daughter got lucky :-)
