Anyone have first hand information on the better dorms for freshman girls? My daughter has been accepted into the Honors College but doesn't want to live in Holmes. She's considering a roommate who wants Johnstone but I've heard it's not at all nice. I've heard good things about Lever and Manning.
Any info???

Thanks. I already have all the official website info and was hoping for some first hand info.
Mitch??? Or anyone who has recently visited??

The newer dorms (Manning, Lever, honors, etc) are nicer than the older ones (Johnstone, Shoeboxes). I’ve known a few girl that have lived in Lever and they have developed close relationships with the girls on their hall; however, this is probably true for most of the girls dorms. Johnstone is a bit run down (its being torn down soon), but my friends there seem to have more fun in their dorm than anyone else I know. Is there a reason your daughter doesn’t want Holmes (I passed on that opportunity too)?

She just doesn’t think the kids in Holmes will be her “type”. Also, do you recommend freshmen try to find their own roommates thru facebook or is the school pretty successful at matching kids up?

im on the clemson - class of 2013 facebook group and there are like 300+ roommate surveys so some students have/are trying to find roommates that way instead of risking the random system

Is she worried about the kids being less social, all about studying, etc? I decided against Holmes to room with a friend, but a lot of the kids I know who live/have lived there have loved it. It’s co-ed, it the nicest freshman dorm, and most of the people are look to have a good time while also doing well.

I know some people that have done the facebook thing for finding roommates. It seems to work pretty well (I wouldn’t say its necessarily better than the survey), but be sure that there is clarity in the decision. For example, partying every once in a while is different to most people, so be sure that both people are on the same page if you do go that route.

Yeah, I sort of have a similar question about the Honors dorm. Is it really that much less social than the other dorms? I just sort of have the mindset that everyone there is somewhat “dorky” and mainly just focused on studying.

Also, others can dorm in honors despite not being honors if they are with you. Correct?

Non-honors students cannot live in the Honors dorm even if their roomie is in the honors program. I really don’t think the honors kids are “dorky” and the shoeboxes are old & nasty. Johnstone has a rep as a party dorm.

Most of the kids in the honors dorm are just as social as in any other dorm. They just tend to get better grades and probably spend a bit more time studying. There are some people who are more reclusive and study all the time, but that is not the majority. I would explain the comparison as this; in a regular dorm there may be a number of people looking to go out during the week and on the weekends, whereas in the honors dorm most people will just go out on the weekends (not a great example, but it shows the different views of each group). If you find Holmes to be too restricting, you can always hang out with a friend in Johnstone or somewhere else. I know a lot of honors students who did this and liked the ability to go home to Holmes (nicer and quieter).

What are the recs for freshmen dorms for guys and/or coed, non-honors, social but not party all the time. Or is facebook best way to decide this?
