Daughter moved in day 1 of freshman move-in…doesn’t really matter which day you move; just depends on whether you are bringing your stuff mostly from home or are planning on shopping locally for dorm stuff…the Goon Squad moves you into your room very quickly: amazingly efficient process so it just depends on how long parents are staying, etc…

I moved in early but it doesn’t matter. Orientation won’t start until everyone arrives and that won’t be until the last day of move-in or that weekend. Many students tend to get homesick the first few days so I recommend you plan your move-in date with your roommate. That way, you’ll at least have someone to bond with when your parents leave.

I am a transfer, but I opted to move in early because all of the orientation events are on Thursday. Moving in on Wednesday gives me time to go to Target/Walmart, unpack, set my room up just the way I like it and explore for a while without having to watch the time to go to different events. I am coming from a while away so I am not bringing everything I am packing what I need and then buying the other things like storage items once I get there after I see what the room looks like and what fits where I can determine how much addition storage I need. My roomie and I coordinated our move-in so that we arrive on the same day in seperate time slots to give the first person time to unpack so the room isn’t too cluttered when the 2nd person arrives, I find that to be a good idea if you have an open double like we do.

It also give you a chance to visit the bookstore with your parents, if your like me my parents usually buy some of the books for me so they can do it while they are there.

But yea I would say opting for an early move in date would be better because it gives you more time… You won’t feel rushed to do everything before heading to orientation activites and then come back late to an unpacked room when your dead tired!

I moved in on the early date my freshman year (2 years ago). We had to wait in the line outside for a fairly long time (maybe 45 min-an hour), but that was probably a function of being at BBB (tons of freshmen). I helped out with movein last year as an Orientation Leader at both BBB and Sadler, and there was much less of a line than I remembered from my freshman year. Moving in early is good so you can pick the side of the room you want, though, so I’d definitely suggest it (unless you work it out with the roommate ahead of time).

Here’s the process: drive to the parking lot closest to your building (indicated on the orientation packet), wait in line for anywhere from 5 min to an hour (bring lunch and/or a deck of cards…usually water is provided), drive up to the circle where you’ll be greeted by a university rep who will send the student in to pick up his/her room key and some additional information, while the parents meet the Goon Squad, the upperclassmen who will move all your student’s stuff to his/her room using giant gray bins. Goon Squad won’t move anything that is both large AND extremely expensive (liability), so if you’re bringing a 48" plasma tv, plan on porting it yourself. Your student returns as you get to the door with the bins, unlocks the door, and the Goon Squad helps you put everything on the floor of the room, makes another trip if necessary, and then you’re on your own. Honestly, the Goon Squad is a huge help, and makes the whole process pretty darn easy.
