Somehow, we all survived. Wed. afternoon was a hot one, waiting in the Park lot for 2 hours, then avoiding dozens of fender benders negotiating around the road near the quad dorms.

Was the process any smoother for families assigned morning move in?

D is settled in, thankfully, making friends, getting along fine without Mom and Dad ........

MADad,
I was thinking about you - Is the Gilbert triple working out? Did you find enough floor/bed/storage space? My daughter has been training in that heat - very difficult for her since weather she left is high 60's. Also her dorm room is on the first floor - the windows don't open all the way - the girls are cooked.

So far so good on the triple. The room would be VERY spacious if set up as a double. None of the beds have to be bunked, and there is not a lot of floor space, but more than I expected. The girls are creatively looking at ways to use their space.

Helping out with electronics issues from 350 miles away is difficult:

In a double-converted-to-triple, shouldn't there be THREE ethernet jacks? The other two roommates who moved in first hooked up, and daughter can't seem to locate a third jack, given all the furniture against the walls.

Also, how many cable TV hookups does a room contain? One roommate hooked up her TV, leaving the other 2 out. I've tried to explain over the phone what a cable splitter is and how to install it.

MADad, have your daughter call ResNet (X5-2000) for the ethernet stuff if she still can't find one because there should be one per pillow.
For TV, it is only one per room no matter if there is one person or 4 people.

right...agreed as hopkinslax said...
just for ur info...last year, when i moved in, i waited in line for about 4-5 hours...so...the process def got smoother...

Friends whose son is a sophomore at UR told us part of their moving in story from last year. They were waiting in the parking lot and did not want to keep the car engine running. So, each time the car line moved, three of the four in the car took turns (parents, student and a sibling) getting out of the car and pushed. They saved gas, got their exercise, and met a lot of good Samaritans!

It was hot this year (relatively speaking). The line at the parking lot was long but the unloading at the dorm curbside was very efficient. Many creative ways of putting the rooms together but some of them required special bed frames that the students have to request/get from some dept or another. My s and his roommate did not bother.

Our morning move in was just fine. We only spent an hour or so in line, but were entertained by an a cappella group and a group of jugglers. We didn't want to burn gas, either, so we just kept shutting the engine and restarted; we also all got out of the car. It was a pain (and we probably wasted more gass than we saved!), but with the heat, it seemed the only way we could survive it!

Curbside move-in was a breeze. I can't believe how quickly the kids descended and emptied the car, and then went on to the next. D's in a double that had the lofted beds; they didn't like it, so the dads moved furniture & brought them down. The previously roomy room got quite crowded! But I'm glad they did it; d's got some kind of bug that they gave her antibiotics for, and it's much easier for her that she doesn't have to climb up and down. With any luck, she'll be able to make it to class tomorrow.
