How hard is it to get them?

single - depends on your college. i think warren students have a better chance (4 out of 10 has a single in the dorms).

ok. good.. i applied for warren.

theres no specific freshman parking -- you will have to get an S permit like the other students and look for parking spots wherever you can find them. warren is lacking in the parking though, probably more so than any other college (the rest all have at least one decent-sized lot adjacent to them). you can always find a spot to park your car ... though it may not be on the "real" campus -- spots in regents are usually plentiful ... but far.

astrina when we toured UCSD two years ago they told us freshman were not allowed to have cars on campus without special permission. Has this policy been changed?

The special permission is probably that $500+ parking permit. =)

Unless it's really needed, cars should stay home. There are a ton of public transportation problems available, and students get a free bus pass!

Agreed, at least for Fall Quarter freshman year.

A car would be an excellent idea after that initial period.

I've never heard of restrictions on freshmen bringing cars (although as a non-freshman now, I wholeheartedly support any measure that opens up more parking spots for the rest of us) ... but it's not that hard to have a senior student buy the pass for you.

I've been securing "B" (grad student/staff) parking permits since sophomore year :)

how`have you been doing that?!

Join a lab and befriend the carless grad students and postdocs. :)

I carried on the tradition when I became a grad student though, my friend must have been the only person parking in the little Pepper Canyon lot with a "B" permit!

There isn't a restriction for freshmen (although several other UC campuses do). Permits just cost several hundred dollars per quarter

Oh. Cause I want to go back home every week or two.. so i wanna bring a car on campus.

You need a car, or need to be close friends with lots of people with cars, to have fun at UCSD.

Yup, one of my friends bought her big mini van up here and it easily drives 8 people around :)

Real UCSD students need only a bike.

That's because real UCSD students travel only to Geisel.

You DO NOT need a car to have fun at UCSD.

I don't know where people get this from.

well, to each his own, but there's something to say about the state of public transportation in san diego. (ie, it's not that great.)

i started working primarily to pay for having a car -- and once i got one sophomore year, i never thought about giving it up again. what can i say? we're california!
