I couldn't find anything about this on the first two pages of the board, so sorry if this's already been mentioned.

I'm coming to Indiana this fall, and I have every intention of bringing a car. I'm from California, so I won't be driving home ever, but having it there will be beneficial since I plan to get a job and other stuff like that.

When I visited IU a year ago, they said that Freshman have to park at the stadium and move their cars every time there's a game.

The people on the IU '14 Facebook group said that if you live in Northwest, you get to park at your dorm. Someone else mentioned that there's a "freshman parking lot" somewhere on campus, but I've seen no proof of this.

I saw something online about parking at a lot somewhere else in Bloomington and having to take a shuttle to that location everytime you want the car.

I'm planning to live in Central. Is there a parking lot there? If not, is the stadium the only option? And seeing that most of us WANT to go to the football games, what are we supposed to do with our cars on those saturdays while we're at the game?

Basically just asking for the scoop on parking. And does it get easier as you become a sophomore/junior?

The part you heard about freshmen having to park in the stadium lots is probably an urban legend.

You add your name to a waiting list, with no rule against freshmen getting a permit near a dorm, but it is probably harder for freshmen. You need to apply for a D5 permit if you are in Ashton, Teter or Wright. There is a big lot on the north side of 10th Street at Sunrise. Click the link at the top of the page of the URL below, and you will be requested to log in with your IU info. If you have been assigned a room, you will automatically be prompted to add your name to the waitlist. The earlier you are assigned a room and get yourself on the waitlist, the better your chances of getting a permit. So you might check the site a lot if your room hasn’t been assigned yet to be one of the first freshmen to apply.

If you can’t get a D5 permit, you will have to get an E permit and park in the stadium lots and move your car for games.

hmmm bthomp, just went to that link and logged in… his name is there with a button to click to register…no mention of a rooom assignment…but does the fact that his name is there mean he has been assigned…as you know we are waiting to hear about residence scholar

I’m guessing that it means that he has been assigned, but that you have not been notified yet. I think sometimes things are approved before they notify you through email, letter, or whatever.

For “zone,” does it list “D5”? D5 permits are for central neighborhood residents only, so it it says “D5” I think there is a good chance that he has been assigned Ashton Johnston. Of course, the D5 doesn’t have to be Residence Scholars, but could be Teeter, Wright, or a non-residence scholar Ashton.

nothing in the zone section at that site… confirmation email just says D zone waitlist … will hear in august. so i guess not assigned yet. thanks

Ok cool, thanks. I’m on the waitlist for “D” now even though i have no idea what that means.

what is the city zone 7 permit? That’s gotta be really far away from campus, right? (RPS site says thats $25/year, which I find hard to believe unless its in China)

^ I think it’s located elsewhere in Bloomington and you have to take a shuttle from the campus to the parking lot and vice versa. But don’t hold me to it.

City Zone 7 permits are given to students that live in the Collins dorm. Basically because of its location, there aren’t any major parking lots for its residents, so they are given City Permits so they can park on the street next to the sidewalks. That’s probably why it’s so cheap… you don’t get to park in an actual parking lot like the other zones.

If you aren’t able to get a D pass, there is always the E pass. As previously stated, you are only allowed to park at the Stadium with an E pass. There are two buses that go to the Stadium, the A bus (goes all around campus) and the X bus (goes straight to the IMU).

However, you can park in any non-24 hour designated spot (A, C, etc) between 5PM-7AM every day. Also, any car, regardless of whether they have a pass, may park in any D spot between Friday at 5PM and Sunday at 11PM. That gives you many, many options to move your car to on game days. :]

I had an E pass this year, and what I did was leave it at the stadium during the week (I never really needed it anyway) and went to pick up my car after 5PM on Friday and parked it at my dorm until Sunday night so it’s conveniently there whenever I needed to go anywhere.
