Hey! I have a cousin about to enter high-school next year and she is wondering what classes she should/should not take as a newbie.

I’ve already shown her my own 9th grade class schedule:

Honors Chem

Honors Physics

Honors English 9

Journalism A

Honors US Hist

French 3

Honors Algebra II

Does anyone have any advice for her? Good classes to take? Classes to avoid? Problems with classes you encountered your Freshman Year? The posting of your freshman schedules would be appreciated. Thanks!

PS. Any (other unrelated) advice on succeeding in high-school in general for a 9th grader would be welcome too!

If at all possibly, I like to recommend 1 AP for freshmen looking at top school, it doesn't have to be a hard one.

Other than that: don't dabble in several languages, get to level 4 in 1; double-up on math whenever possible; don't take AP Physics online ever.

As for me:

1.AP Art History Online
2.Advanced Composition Honors
3.Applications of Science Honors
4.English I Honors
5.Engineering Honors
6.Geometry Online
7.Algebra II Online
8.Pre-cal Honors Online
9.World History Honors

Yes I took 10 periods in the year when my school offer A/B schedule and then switched to 4x4 block scheduling, that meant I had to make up periods for my online classes. I actually didn't tripple-up on math, I took Geometry during the summer after 9th grade, but officially it is part of my 9th grade schedule.

What's the point of taking pre-cal in 9th grade? I've never doubled up on math courses, I took it in 10th grade and I can still take multivariable (at a local uni) in 12th grade.

My 9th grade schedule was very much controlled by my school because I was still in Honors (2 year program, over in 9th grade. My school is 6 years). This is what everyone's 9th grade schedule at my school looks like except some people are normal instead of Honors or AA, incoming freshmen do not take Latin, and only about 10% of each class is up a year in math like I am. We don't get real choices 'till 10th grade.

Honors English
Honors Modern History
Honors Latin III
Biology AA
Gym/Study Hall
Senior Orchestra
Algebra II AA

GUElle - anything similar to your schedule will be fine. That's perfectly solid. Just do all honors for the core classes, and possibly for FL as well, and she'll be set up fine for the next four years.

im a freshman right now
im taking
art history online
algebra 2/trig
world history
biology
pre-ap english
french2
theatre/sewing
web authoring/leadership

my school offers few APs and they're all for upperclassman
freshmans arent allowed to take it

Do not take Physics AP in freshman year.
That is just crazy.
Rather take Biology or Environmental science AP which is way more easier.
besides, i'm taking french IV in freshman year, so maybe that's sth to consider.
other than that, nothing to say lol

My high school absolutely sucks.
My freshman schedule (block schedule)
1st Semester:
Honors Geometry (year long)
Honors English I (year long)
Keyboarding (required)
U.S. History

2nd Semester:
Same
Same
Wellness (required)
Physical Science (required)

Not much space for me to take classes I wanted, but I decided to get rid of all the required classes to graduate. I self-studied for APUSH. Easy.

I had a pretty standard freshman schedule, pale in comparison to what I imagine the rest of CC's was:

Honors Biology I
Honors World History
Honors English Literature & Composition
Honors Euclidean Geometry
Personal Fitness/Health [ew]
Mixed Chorus

I definitely should have taken a language, but I was determined to stick with chorus since I'd done it all through middle school. But then, I ended up dropping it this year (10th grade) because I changed schools and missed auditions. Blehh. But anyway, it doesn't really matter because I'm skipping a year in el espanol, and I'll still have technically completed 4 years of it (but in 3 years) by the time I graduate.

I say to take a language, and take honors level in all core subjects. It's easier then to decide what subjects you can handle in advanced levels throughout the rest of high school. Freshman honors classes usually aren't too difficult to handle.

Do not take Physics AP in freshman year.

it's not actually that bad, freshman year schedules tend to be easier and you'll probably be more motivated so if you take physics freshman year you'll have more time to spend on it. it can be a lot harder to take physics ap when you're exhausted and have six other aps raping you up the butt. i took ap physics and ap bio freshman year and together they made up most of my workload.

that being said, do make sure you've had trig first

The honors classes at my school are REALLY honors-level. As in, we have a ton of work/reading/tests. The Molecular Biology Honors course pretty much covered most of the AP Biology topics. This year, my Chemistry Honors class contains about 70-75% of the AP Chemistry material.

You guys are future Ivy League students... Good Luck! =D

For guelle, Im taking Chem as a 10th grader. Physics in 11th. Even the smartest kid I know is only taking Chem and Physics as a sophomore.

I thought most schools require you to take World Hist/European Hist before US History... :O

So, most of you guys don't take a Tech course or a PE course? WHAT ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO TAKE DURING YOUR SENIOR YEAR???
aigiqinf you're highest overachiever I've ever seen.

Advice: Never listen to school counselors because their standards are very low low low. I listened and now I'm only taking AlgII reg and only chem reg.

Take AP Physics in senior because some schools have exam drops where if you have an A, you can "exempt" from taking the final.

During your 4 yrs of HS make sure you take a variety of courses. Tech, music, art etc.

Take a language for 4 yrs. Even if you hate it like me...

Bad Freshman Year too . . .
[ul][]Algebra II Honors
[]English I Honors
[]Earth/Space Science Honors
[]Anatomy and Physiology Honors
[]AP Human Geography (got a 4 -_-)
[]Health (half-year)/PE(half-year)
[li]Spanish 4 Honors[/ul]
[/li]

Your cousin's schedule seems good. Keep it up.

here, freshmans are not supposed to take AP classes as they are created for 10th-12 grades; but I attend a Gifted and Talented School with teachers who fight for us to be in the more rigourous courses. Next year there are about 12 of us who are going to be placed in AP Human Geography or AP World History with the upper classman. If your cousin is globaly gifted… or gifted only in a certain area I would suggest her to find an AP or GT coordinator to help her choose a scheduale that fits her needs. I would suggest that along with the many required courses, she should double block a Science or math in PreAP or Honors (both are the highest courses offered to freshman at different schools) to get ahead of her peers and look better on paper. Also tell her that it is good to splurge for a foreign language for that pesky AP International Diploma in her Senior Year. Just remind her that it is all about learning at the level that challenges her, and looking good on paper! Also to not worry. You can take the hard classes and still have fun in high school, even if it’s just at lunch. Also, EVERY SCHOOL offers different courses. I would like to advance more quicly than I can but my district does not offer all of the courses that say, the Eastern Coast would in their public schools. If, and only IF, that is your cousins level than I would say GO FOR IT! Shes got some interesting classes and a good variety! Keep it up and keep encouraging her to be different!

I undertand, sometimes I feel behind too looking at the names of people’s freshman classes but then i remember that at my school pre-AP is the same thing as honors and I would excel in those classes as well… its all about where you live and where you go sometimes.

Some of us that don’t take honors classes as freshmen can still get into some pretty good schools…

My school didn’t have honors or APs for non-TAG (even the smart ones, like me, who weren’t TAG because we transferred from out of district) for freshmen year and the only one offered sophomore year is honors bio. And yet, SOMEHOW, many people at my school get into Ivys/top LACs/top publics. GASP
