Freshman year grades

Hi,

I'm a freshman at UPenn, and I love it here. I just had my finals, one of which was MATH114. Prior to taking the final, I was doing pretty decent in the class, but I got sick during the week of the final, bombed it (it's 40% of my grade), and now I have a C in calc II (btw my prof is Chinburg, very nice guy).

I have always gotten straight A's in highschool, and I've never dreamed that I could end up with a C. I worked hard, studied, but I now have a huge dent in my gpa. Does anyone know if there's a way to fix this? I'm pretty crushed and I have no idea what to do. Should I try emailing the professor, or should I just move on and hope to do better in the future?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

i found out my final grade for a math course prior to leaving campus that semester, and i went to the professor to talk to him - he managed to find things i had done correctly in midterms and on the final that bumped me up a partial grade

i would wager there's not much you can do at this point, though i didn't have chinburg and can't speak to what he might do if you were to email him

no need to fret. i also did really badly in this semester in math (104 actually. worst course in penn history) there isn't much you can do about it, except think rationally and postively. everyone (yes, everyone, even the people that pretend they are studying and lie about their grades so that people "respect" them) dicks around their first semester at uni. trust me. if you put if into perspective, it's really not going to affect your overall learning/academic success over the next four years.

you are just the same talented, hardworking, and dedicated person you've always been!-and employers will see that. it's just that college takes time to get adjusted to (and in your case, you were sick for exams, but the outcome was still the same) you have a fresh semester coming up, so here's your chance to own it.

I have the exact same problem. All A's and a C+ in Math114. I'm pretty disappointed, too, especially considering that I really thought I got the B- after I took the final. When I calculate my numeric average in the class, it was an 87. Only at an ivy would that turn into a C+. The class was always on the backburner for me this semester, so I guess I deserve the grade. But I'm not too worried - it's just one class in my first semester where the grade wasn't perfect. I'm a ASCB major, so it's not in my degree requirements, but was my math elective. Don't sweat it - you'll forget about it by the end of next semester for sure.

If you continue to work very hard, one C won’t affect your prospects.
