Freshmen at UPenn in Wharton here to ANSWER QUESTIONS

Is it true that the hardest part of Penn is getting in, once you are there at least Freshman year are the classes really challenging? Did you have to make a big adjustment coming from high school to Penn? Is the partying at Penn comparable to other schools or is it just more than the other Ivys? Besides partying, what else can you do for fun? And, what is the learning atmosphere at Penn like? I know I have a lot of questions, but I would really appreciate any responses.

im a freshman in the college and the classes definitely aren't too bad but it really depends what you take. People sometimes really struggle with stuff like Math 104 (like Calc BC) or Intro to Econ courses, but generally it's not bad at all. You can easily get a B+ or A- in almost anything.

In terms of difference between this and high school, it really depends what kind of high school you went to. I went to a public school which was just ok, so I can definitely tell a difference between that and this but it's not a huge adjustment. For people who went to a top private school, it's probably a lot easier.

For partying, I'd say it's more so than most Ivies (although I haven't been there to see) but probably on par with schools like NYU or Wash U or somethign like that. But it's definitely nothing compared to big state schools, where there's constant drinking 6 or 7 nights a week. Here it's pretty much a lot of parties Thurs-Sat and then if you want you can go to a bar other days of the week but most people don't.

There's definitely other stuff to do here besides party. I haven't really done it yet cause I like the frat/bar scene so I usually stick to it. But there are always really good concerts coming to Philly and there a few good areas to hang out in downtown, like center city or old city or on south street.

Hope that helps...

sorry but im still wondering about this "apply early" thing.

for ed to wharton (deadline november 1), what is early?

I think you said any time before the deadline? but i cant have understood you right because applications arent allowed after the deadline...or by that do you mean received anytime before the deadline, because they only have to postmarked before the deadline.

i sent mine in about 3 days ago, is that going to hurt me?

what are my chances at wharton with a 2000 SAT and 3.9 GPA uw, and average EC's? should i apply? also cant do ED because i need to compare financial offers from all the schools im applying to. so, if not UPENN, what other top-notch business schools do I have a chance at?

No chance at Wharton.

no chance really????

RD, it's very slim. Slim to none.

whats RD? y so what other top-notch business schools should I consider?

RD=regular decision. i really don't know about business schools. babson, maybe. some state schools have good business schools, SC and UNC, for example. if you have one in your state that would help. so i'm not gonna continue, cuz like i said i know nothing about business schools, but i will say look into the U of California system, cuz they have a lot of really good schools (UCLA, UCSB, UCD, UCR, UCB) with relatively low SAT ranges (like 1210-1350), and admit rates (some around 45%), so if you could find one with a good business school give it a look

only UC schools with undergrad business prgm is UCB(best UC school) and UCR(very lowly ranked UC school). what other schools besides UPENN are top notch, diverse, not too big student body, with good business prgm???

i can have a look later, right now I'll tell you to look at the gamecocks. seriously, they're pretty good, especially @ int'l business, i think. but the school is big, and in columbia :-</p>

ok, L@@K:

Carnegie Mellon, U Texas-Austin (BIG), USC, WUSTL, Emory, ND, U Washington, Babson, BC, Case Western Reserve (no app fee), Boston U, Tulane, Pitt, SC

the stats say that penn is very diverse...but beyond the stats, how much interaction between different groups are there? i've heard a lot about how cliquey penn is...how true is this?

Well to answer the first question about whether you should apply to Wharton according to your stats I say go for it....why not.....I mean you definetely wont be the strongest candidate stat wise but thats not everything....and what do you have to lose by applying....you get rejected...ok take it and move on....go for it....and if you dont want to pay the app fee than just get a waiver....I applied to a bunch of schools not knowing if I had a real shot of getting in...cuz i didnt really care if I got rejected or not....I always just thought what if.....that is how I ended up at Wharton.....

Now to answer the clique question...yes there are a lot of cliques at UPenn....students seperate according to race, wealth, and ethnicity. But you have to remember this will happen at any school you apply to especially the Ivies....but it is also what you make of it....if you want to hang out with all sorts of people you will just have to make the effort....the cliques are not mean in the sense they do not want to meet anyone outside of the clique..... they are very open to forming friendships with others....I personally have an EXTREMELY varied group of friends and I am only a freshmen so I wouldnt really worry about it.....its a reality at all top colleges in the US

would i have a better shot at Wash St Louis over UPENN?

probably...

like how much better are chances at wash stl?

i would you say your chances at wash stl are about 9.72% greater

You'd have a worse shot at Wash U. than Penn CAS, but probably a marginally better chance at Wash U. than Wharton.

The fact is that a 2000 SAT and self-described "average" ECs won't cut it at schools with sub-20% acceptance rates. Nonetheless, with a 3.9 (provided you also rank well) and the 2000 SAT (respectable, but on the low end of most schools' ranges), you can still get into some very good schools--CMU-Tepper, Rice, Emory, UMich, UVa...with the business schools at the latter two being very highly regarded.

rank is 15/765 top 2%
