Fridge Rentals

I have a nuts and bolts question that I have not been able to get an answer to by pouring over all the info on the U of C web site. What is the cost of renting a dorm room refridgerator? We are debating buying one and slupping it to Chicago. Is it worth the effort?

Why not buy it in Chicago?

The nearest decent sized stores are on the near north side of Chicago along Clybourn Avenue from North Avenue to Fullerton. It's an easy trip up from Hyde Park. So I would certainly buy locally.

You might also find that roomie or suitemates will have a fridge. Last year, my D's suite had two fridges without my D buying one.

As a returning student, I felt I should attempt to answer this question in a couple of ways.

First, make sure that the room that is being stayed in does not have a fridge of its own. Depending on the dorm, and the room, some rooms come with fridges. (I'm referring mainly to the mostly upperclassmen rooms in the Shoreland, however, I and many other upperclassmen have freshman roommates this fall, so it's possible that a room would have a full size fridge in the kitchen.)

Now, assuming that the room does not have a kitchen....if there is a roommate involved, check with the roommate to ensure that they are not bringing a fridge with them.

Okay, so if you've gotten to this point in my post, you/your son/daugher is going to need a fridge in the fall. Well, the answer is you can rent a fridge, and the cost of renting often is compareable to buying one...perhaps slightly less expensive. The main benefit of renting a fridge is if at the end of the year the fridge can't easily be transported home. However, most dorms do offer over the summer storage for returning students, and my roommate and I are storing our mini-fridge there (even though we have a full size one in our room as well).

If there isn't really a transportation problem, I would suggest trying to buy one...you can check out marketplace.uchicago.edu - sometimes you can get stuff really cheap from other people. It's nice.

Thanks for the responses. My daughter will be in Coulter House at B-J and I do not believe they have refrigerators in the rooms. Her room mate is from Malaysia, and we know she is not bringing one. I had thought of buying locally, so thanks for the directions to stores. Also, thanks for mentioning the summer storage.
