my neighbor was checking out this site but his computer is broken at the moment so he wanted me to post him. his GPA is 3.418 (rank 211/872) and he has an 1160 (640 M 520 V). Lots of extracarriculars like Beta Club, Spanish Club, Spanis honors society and hes on the Varsity Basketball team (lettered as junior). He has maintained a couple part time jobs including his own lawn business. Says his sumbitted essays were A + Quality. He wants to know if he can get into UT Engineering or Texas A&M Engineering. He's also had VERY CHALLENGING course load including AP classes and many honors classes. TEXAS RESIDENT.

anyone????

Unless your friend is URM or athlete, I unfortunately see little chance of his getting in. I live in College Station, so I know the whole system...if he is a Texas resident and his rank is below the top ten percent (In this case it is around top 25%), then he must have something outstanding to bring him in. An 1160, while solid for A&M, is hardly an admit--A&M accepts people with 1350s and above as long as they are in the top 20%, but in his case, that won't work either. AP Classes will help, but tell your friend to either bring his SATs up considerably, or to find some safeties.

Your friend's SAT math score is kind of low for UT Engineering, considering that he is also not in top 10%. But if he has really good grade in Honors math and science and has won some awards, his chances would be higher.

same observations... low rank and SAT.

Those are the only things holding him back.

mahajan2005, what do you mean by find some safties? anyone else have anny comments...?

safeties are schools you're pretty much sure you can get into

and sorry, but w/ a 10+ % rank and an sat below 1200 i don't see how he could get in, unless there's someting special about him (URM, international award, etc.)

what are my chances to UT/TAMU
My friend let me log onto his account, he messed it up somewhat. Maybe you guys might have a little better idea (Mahajan in particular), increase my chances at all. I dont know if yall know but I go to Kingwood High school (best public school in the state for academics/athletic-uil.com) Does that help any?

Its a bit of a toss up all the same...
A&M is a state school, so once again, it looks for statistics primarily. Class rank and SAT I are used first, and after that it comes down to things like URM, athlete etc. A&M does not have any legacy, so that will not count against you. Its a bit strange that while your SAT II is high, your SAT I is low. My advice would be to study a lot for the SAT I and see if you can take it again.

Your baseball is good, but again, it is an EC. A&M has a top of the line baseball team, so they recruit from a national pool, so you might have some trouble there. Playing, though, is a good sign, and might boost your chances a bit.

The challenging courseload helps, but A&M's main objective in implementing the top ten percent rule was to help minorities who do not necessarily take such courses. Your being in a great high school will not be so hot then, although it would discount your lower class rank.

My advice would be to contact the admissions office. Find their link at tamu.edu (I won't post www. or my link will be blocked). Also, really try to bring that SAT up (a lot). I'd say if it gets over a 1400, your class rank will be discounted and you will hold a solid shot (though not necessarily for honors).

Another idea that my friend is trying out is to go to a local community college, boost the grades up, and apply to A&M. A&M has a pretty weak pool from first year comm. college students so your chance for getting in through that is high. Even next year, the top ten percent rule might be abandoned, so I would say that your chances would increase just by going to comm. college, bringing your GPA very high, and maybe, to ensure the spot, take the SAT I again after much practice.

Once again, good luck.

I'm not sure why my SAT II is high and SAT I is low. I'm not very good at verbal, theres one problem, and the SAT I math problems always seem to trick me, while they really arent that hard. However im used to all of the material covered on the SAT, I guess thats why i did so well. My only other chance to take the SATI again is in December, is that too late?? If not I've used Baron's for the SATI, what other books are reccomended?

bump??? ???

bump. I heard for A&M it is looked highly upon the more interest you show. I.E. send letters to the admissions, more than just one campus visit, etc. Is this true?
