Friend recieved acceptance recently. Possible this early?

It wasnt a likely. Full acceptance with financial aid package and everything. Her stats were like 1900 SATs about 3.5 GPA 30/400 Rank but born in Hong Kong.

weird. i didn't know they sent it this early! i will now be scared to look at my mailbox.

Unless it was E.D. in December, or a GSP letter in the past couple of weeks, no, it isn't possible. Those are the only two ways your friend could have received an acceptance by now.

Daughter came home from school today and also said friend was accepted already, but I don't know the details. Thought maybe it was just a "likely" letter.
What is GSP?

Like I said, unless it's GSP, it's not possible. GSP is the general studies program. There are many threads on the forum which will explain the details.

mike that seems like GSP range to me.

kids who are being offered large amounts of scholarship money are finding out early too because they will be invited to a program in early april (around the time the rest of us will be finding out if we got in or not) to try to convince them to go to nyu

also, you cant just say "that looks like gsp" based on SAT and GPA. yeah they are important but extracurriculars and essays also get ppl in, and some of the schools (tisch, for example) dont weigh the academic scores as high as the other schools.

now, if the person was applying to cas, then yeah, i would say you have a valid point, but i would think the acceptance letter would say gsp.

they were most likely accepted to GSP, but declined to tell you this and just said they got accepted no strings attached

last year almost everyone (about 15 people) at my school who applied to nyu RD got a card inviting them to a welcome thing for "exceptional applicants" at nyu in early april, before they actually got their acceptance. everyone who got this invitation got into nyu, but i didnt and i was waitlisted.
maybe this is what your friend got? and just because her stats werent excellent, maybe she had something else that made her stand out.

"and some of the schools (tisch, for example) dont weigh the academic scores as high as the other schools."

...I'm assuming your not in Tisch, because you have no idea what you are talking about. Tisch weighs academics just as highly as any other school at NYU. They just also happen to weigh talent very highly too...and this is why Tisch is one of the hardest arts programs to get into in the nation. Just FYI.

lindseygs--scrapnel wasn't making an absolute statement about tisch's consideration of academics, but a relative one. sure, tisch may rate academics highly, just not as highly as say, stern.

scrapnel, Sunday in the Square invites haven't gone out yet. In any case, those are invitations only, they are not letters of acceptance, and they certainly don't have f/a info included with them. And, as lindsey says, you're wrong about Tischies. Acceptance at Tisch is based equally on academics and artistic review so don't make the mistake of thinking that Tischies are not just as smart as any other NYU kid. The only people to have received an actual acceptance from NYU so far are E.D. kids and those who applied R.D. who have been referred to GSP. That's it.

Sunday at the Square invites are technically not acceptance letters, but they might as well be. These are likely letters and are only sent to the very top applicants; they wouldn't invite you to this if they didn't want you. I'd venture the acceptance rate for Sunday at the Square invitees is 100% or very close to it. So if you got one of these, you're golden.

she got GSP'ed (assuming she applied RD)

Sorry, wrong thread

matth - yeah, i know that sunday in the square invites haven't been sent out yet, that's not what i was referring to. if you go to the myspace nyu class of 2010 forum, they are discussing this same thing. and if you want i can go find an old livejournal post in the nyu community where quite a few current students told me that nyu sends out a few letters to ppl with really large scholarships early (and some of the kids who told me this were recipients of these)

lindseygs - i wasnt trying to be offensive, im sorry if i came across that way. i definitely understand that tisch students have high grades just as the rest of nyu kids do (actually i dont go to nyu at all, im an applicant this year, and actually for tisch). comparanza is right, i was just trying to say that there are more factors than just grades for tisch students, whereas at, say, cas or stern there is no portfolio review/audition so your application is based even more on grades. for instance, ive heard of sometimes people getting into tisch with gpas that wouldn't have been accepted at other nyu schools (not "low," but just like maybe 3.4-3.5) because their talent in their respective field is incredible. no harm meant at all =) just about EVERYONE at nyu is smart, i have no doubt in that!

I understand what your saying, scrapnel, but it did come across the wrong way. Still, academics at Tisch will be weighed just as highly as at any other NYU school- but Tischies also are judged on their artistic abilities, etc. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that just because your an amazing artist, you'll be accepted regardless of whether or not your academic portfolio is Stern, CAS, etc. material.

no way, i would definitely not think that at all. and i apologize again for coming across poorly.
