From 34 to Perfect

I just took the June ACT and got a 34
E: 35
M: 36
R: 33
S: 33
W:10

I also took it earlier this year (soph) and got a 32 and got a 30 my freshman year. I really want to get the perfect 36, and I doubt the 2 point increase will be as easy as it was from 30 to 32 and from 32 to 34. If anyone out there got a 36, what are your tips? I just need to get over that final hump in Reading and Science...

There was a poster who went from 35 to 36, GreyWolf.

Here’s a related thread about retaking a high score. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/act-preparation/1168804-retake-not-retake.html?

^That poster started off with a 35 though. That’s hardly the same.

I would do the Conflicting Viewpoints passage in science first.

And I try to read fast for the Reading section.

Okay, listen. Concentrate on the reading and drown everything out. Read fast and you’ll get a 36 reading. Science is luck because sometimes it’s impossible other times it’s easy.

I had a 34 in April and retook and got a 36 in June. Honestly, once you are in the 34+ range, you have the potential for a 36. It’s just a matter of focusing intently and processing everything you read. You don’t have any more “tips and tricks” to learn…whether you get a 36 or a 35 or 34 or anything else on your next sitting will matter solely on your concentration, focus, and processing levels.

Just keep taking practice tests in actual test mode and surroundings. Good luck!

I agree with the poster above. I got a 36 first try by simply focusing more intently than I think I ever have in my life. Once you get into the 32+ range there are no “tips” or “tricks” to give you even a 1-point increase. Its all focus and intuition.

I will, again, repeat the very valid point presented in the last two posts. You obviously have the capability to score a 36. Just remember to remain focused and attentive during the test and also hope for a little luck (it never hurts :)).

As for Reading and Science, you are probably already doing pretty well (I think a 33 relates to -2 or -3). Just work fast and remember that the answer will always be found fully supported in the text (or experimental design if Science).

My suggestion: don’t take it again. A 34 is more than enough to convince even the most selective colleges that you are academically prepared for a rigorous curriculum. Anyone who scores in that 32, 33+ range is capable of getting a 36…on a good day and I think that colleges know that. So, don’t fret about your already stellar test scores and focus on something else; perhaps look at your essays or just spend a little time relaxing :)

Just a fun little note probably not worth mentioning: The previous 4 posts were all written by individuals who got a 36. Only on CC…
