I am currently a sophomore at a top 20 university, but am thinking about transfering into a better known school for graduation. I improved greatly in hs and managed to get into a very good school, but still the big names were out of my reach. Now I am wondering if I have a shot at getting into some of the more presitigious top 20 schools and wondering if it might be worth it to transfer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My GPA: 3.73
--its been improving since 1st semester freshmen year when I got a 3.58, I got a 4.0 this semester.
SAT: 1380
HS GPA: not given/not ranked. I would guess maybe a around a B+ (but I went to one of the best schools in the country)
E.C.- Tutor in an inner city elementary school for 5 hours a week. Section Editor for a School Magazine. Community service chair for my Residence Hall, and I am a Tour Guide. I also had an internship with a stock broker in New York this past summer.
--I would have good recomendations and, even though my hs gpa/ sat scores aren't spectacular, I wonder if getting a really good GPA at a top 20 school would give me any chance in getting into a more presitigious school?

What do you all think my chances would be at:
Stanford, Upenn, Columbia, Georgetown ( I know its not top 20), Johns Hopkins, Brown, Northwestern.

I don't know for sure, but I think the GPA would be ok. As a soph HS doesn't count as much. I'd say your chances are not too bad. Either way, go for it, it doesn't hurt (too much) to try

Keep up the good grades in college and make your essay spectacular and you have all those schools in the bag. Collge GPA overrides ure highschool gpa if it's that good.
Your SAT scores will help too.

thanks for the advice. I really don't know anyone who has transfered or anything about how difficult it is to transfer. What do you all think my shot would be at each school? I'm just trying to get an idea if it is a complete waste of time or not. Thanks again.

Trying is never bad....you have a good chance at every school...transfer students get in ALOT easier than first years. Only bad thing is if you're transferring after your first year of college, that they weigh in your highschool gpa in admittance as well...but i think a 4.0 at a top 20 is pretty damn good. That says alot about improvement and colleges will look very highly at that. And hell...if you don't get admitted to your number one pick for the fall 2005 semester...pull a 4.0 for the first semester of ure sophmore year...apply for spring...and I can gurantee you'll get in. They'll stop weighin in highschool to the extent they do after ure third semester, because then you've proven that you can handle college and that you might've just been "livin it up" in highschool.

whoops..ure a sophmore...if you currently have a 4.0...you'll get in unless they have some kind of limit to when you can transfer. Check the credit limit cuz if you have over 60 hours...some might not be able to transfer

most colleges look for a GPA with a B+ - A average...that'd be between a 3.5 and 4
You'll be fine...never hurts to try...i'm a first year at VA tech and i'm applying to UVA...i got a 3.5 in highschool...a 1310 on SATs...and a 4.0 so far in college...so my chances of getting in there are pretty good...so if you have a really high gpa at a top 20...you have a good chance of getting in to top 10

Hi, I just found this site and was wondering if anyone could give me a little more insight.

I want to transfer to Georgetown as a Junior next Fall. In HS I had only a 1000 SAT score, and as of now, I have a 4.0 GPA with 58 college credits behind me. I am also a candidate for the " Georgetown Preferred Consideration Program" that Georgetown offers. I feel as if I have all of the credentials to be a Georgetown student, with the exception of a silly SAT score thats mainly used for HS seniors. Any thoughts, anyone?

You could try taking your SATs again...relearn geometry and you'll bring it up dramatically...but i highly doubt they'll look at it so you probably don't even have to worry about it...."Preferred Consideration" means "please apply"

Thank you so much! I have taken 4 math courses at NVCC( Geometry included) since graduating from High School, and received an A in all. I think I would do much better on the SAT's a second time around :-)
